SIKESTON -- Notre Dame's Nathan McGuire solidified his position as arguably the best high school pitcher in Southeast Missouri with his dominating performance in the Bulldogs' 10-3 win over host Sikeston Monday.
McGuire, a senior, improved to 4-0 as Notre Dame extended its perfect season to 6-0, including a 4-0 mark in SEMO Conference play. McGuire went the distance, allowing just two hits and walking two while striking out 15 of 21 batters faced.
"Nathan dominated," said Notre Dame coach Gregg Muench. "He kept them off balance with his off-speed pitches and he spotted his fastball wherever and whenever he wanted to."
Notre Dame scored five runs in the both the third and seventh innings. Sikeston scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
McGuire also helped himself at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Freshman Josh Eftink continued his strong early-season play with two hits and five RBIs.
"It's a big win for us," Muench said. "We've started off the season with four tough conference games and we've won them all, so we're really happy with that."
Notre Dame won the JV game 7-3 in eight innings. Tommy Wencewicz earned the victory.
The Bulldogs will host Jackson today in a rematch of the season's first game, which Notre Dame won 9-0.
"Jackson has been playing well since we saw them early in the season so we're expecting a tough game with them," said Muench.
Scott City 5, Chaffee 0
SCOTT CITY -- Tim Lowery went the distance on the mound with a four-hit shutout Monday to keep Scott City undefeated at 5-0.
Lowery (2-0) struck out 12 and walked two in seven innings of work. Josh Hanlon started for Chaffee and took the loss as the Red Devils fell to 2-5.
Joey Jacobs had two hits, including an RBI triple, to lead the Rams' offense. Scott City scored a run in the second, three in the third and one more in the fifth.
Scott City will host Kelly Friday while Chaffee travels to Dexter Thursday.
Perryville 4, De Soto 3
PERRYVILLE -- Josh Moll picked up a complete-game win Monday to lead Perryville.
Moll struck out nine and allowed five hits and four walks in the victory as the Pirates improved to 5-2.
Perryville plays at Farmington Wednesday.
Kelly 18, Bloomfield 9
BLOOMFIELD -- Kelly pounded 20 hits and five home runs Monday as the Hawks improved to 4-2 with its fourth straight win.
Denver Stuckey led the Hawks by going 5-for-5 with a triple, two homers and six RBIs. Ben Klipfel went 4-for-5, John Livingston 3-for-5, Justin Vetter 4-for-5 and Jim Hulshof 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs. Brandin Pattengill and Jason Glastetter added home runs.
Vetter earned the win. He went five innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking two.
"We've really picked it up and have started to play well since early in the season," said Kelly coach Mike Scott. "Everybody seems to be coming around."
Kelly will host St. Vincent Wednesday.
SOFTBALL
Kelly 5, Bloomfield 0
BLOOMFIELD -- Kelly remained unbeaten Monday with a strong pitching performance from Kim Riley.
The Lady Hawks improved to 6-0 as Riley went the distance. Riley (4-0) struck out eight in seven innings while walking only one and allowing two hits.
Riley also had two of the Lady Hawks' eight hits. Pam Essner and Ashley Beggs also had two hits for Kelly. Beggs plated three RBIs.
The Lady Hawks scored one run in the first and added two runs in both the second and fourth innings.
Kelly will host St. Vincent Wednesday.
GIRLS SOCCER
Jackson 3, Notre Dame 1
JACKSON -- Jackson improved to 4-2 and dropped Notre Dame to 4-4-1 with Monday's win.
Dana Eakins scored two goals and Hallie Roseman had the other for Jackson while Jill Edwards tallied for Notre Dame.
"It was a pretty good game," said Notre Dame coach Jeff Worley. "We played them pretty tight, but Jackson has a good team."
Notre Dame hosts Cape Central today. Jackson isn't scheduled again until the Lady Indians travel to Marion (Ill.) next Tuesday.
GOLF
Poplar Bluff Invitational
POPLAR BLUFF -- Jackson and Cape Central golfers placed well behind first-place Poplar Bluff Monday during the Seventh Annual Poplar Bluff Invitational.
Poplar Bluff won the 14-team tournament with a team total of 307 for 18 holes. Jackson tied with Sikeston for third with a 341. Central took seventh with a 345. Arcadia Valley finished in second place while New Madrid and Farmington tied for fifth.
Jackson was led by a 79 shot by Travis Reiminger. John Litzelfelner and Tyler Luebbers both carded 85's and Clint Faries shot 92.
"We'd been averaging a lot lower than what we shot, so it wasn't a really good day for us," said Jackson coach Ron Cook. "But we still tied for third."
Central was led by Danny Grossbeck, who shot an 81. Dane McLaird followed with an 85, then Bryan Welker (86) and Chris Patterson (93).
Jackson hosts Dexter today while Central visits New Madrid Thursday.
