MALDEN, Mo. - Athletes from more than a dozen Southeast Missouri high schools converged here Tuesday to compete in the Malden Invitational Track and Field Meet.

Kennett High School sophomore Austin Gattis competed in the Discus Throw event and took home gold.

“I've been doing this about three years now,” Gattis said during warm-ups. “I've done pretty decent in the past.

“Hopefully I'll do well today,” he added. “I'm at about 120 feet.”

His throw Tuesday traveled past the 120-foot mark. Gattis topped out at 124.34 feet.

Malden's Zion Bell placed 12th in the event with a 91-foot throw and East Prairie's Hunter Palmer placed 18th with a 79-foot throw.

The invitational was Malden High School junior Christian Rutledge's debut in the pole vault event.

“I just cleared eight feet,” Rutledge said of a practice run. “I've never done this before.

“This is my first meet,” he continued. “I ran track last year, long distance. This is a lot more fun. Becky Vipperman is the pole vault coach. She's a good coach. She's helped me a lot. I come out here and I practice every day. She helps me with my form. I've learned if you hesitate, you've just got to go ahead and go through it.”
