Maevers leads Crusaders to Oak Ridge title

The Saxony Lutheran boys cross country team placed four runners in the top five to take first at the Oak Ridge Invitational on Wednesday.

Trey Maevers took the top spot in 16 minutes, 54 seconds. Max Wieser was third, Grant Lehmann was fourth and Peter Winningham was fifth.

Saxony's top runner, Brandon Etzold, did not run due to a minor injury.

"Trey Maevers ran a great race," Saxony Lutheran coach Larry Cleair said.

Cody Roper of Advance was second in 17:17. Nate Middleton also finished in the top 10 for Advance in sixth.

Dustin Owens of Oak Ridge finished eighth.

Crystal City finished first on the girls side, led by winner Megan Hudson. Whitney Breightenstein of Meadow Heights finished fourth.

Jessica Drew led the Delta girls with a ninth-place finish.

Saxony Lutheran's Andrew Etzold won the boys junior varsity race in 18:53.

BOYS SOCCER Central 5, Sikeston 1

Tyson Whiteside scored twice as Central ran its current win streak to four games with a home win.

The Tigers (16-2) had won 12 straight earlier in the season between dropping their season-opener to St. Pius and losing this past weekend in Quincy, Ill., to Naperville, Ill., Neuqua Valley.

Matt Hester, Lance Altenthal and Cody Gaither added goals for Central, which led 3-0 at halftime.

Joey Hodge, Cole Crist, Jared Thomas, Jordan Zaruba and Gaither had assists.

Jordan Young played the first half in goal and Clayton Upton played the second half.

JV -- Central won 4-0.
