St. Vincent played its opener Friday night against Priory, a team it had lost to last season, without running back Kyle Kline.

But the Indians didn't have any problems moving the ball against the Rebels, a St. Louis County private school that plays in Class 3.

St. Vincent, which returns several players from last year's Class 1 playoff team, racked up 233 yards on the ground Friday night in a 36-14 win.

Leading the way was senior Tyler Lozier, who rushed for 90 yards on just eight carries and scored two touchdowns. Lozier's 59-yard touchdown jaunt late in the first quarter was the game's first tally. He added a 6-yard run in the third quarter to give the Indians a 19-7 lead.

Anthony Brown added 83 yards on nine carries and scored one touchdown. Waylon Richardet picked up 44 yards on five carries.

Jonathan Buehler kicked the only field goal for a local team in Week One, booting a 25-yarder.

St. Vincent was ranked No. 6 in the state's Class 1 poll following the first week.

Schaefer off to good startScott City senior Matt Schaefer, the leading rusher among local players last season with 1,244 yards, opened the 2004 season by exceeding his rushing average from last year.

Schaefer picked up 157 yards on 27 carries at Scott City decked Malden 44-20 on Friday night. He also caught a touchdown pass from Mark Johnston.

Johnston, a senior making his first start at quarterback, threw for 185 yards and four touchdowns. Also catching touchdown tosses were Matt Backfish (75 yards receiving), Luke McClellan (72 yards receiving) and Jason Schenimann.
