Former Southeast Missouri State basketball player and Southeast basketball coach Dickey Nutt's son, Logan Nutt, is the new boys basketball coach at Woodland High School in Marble Hill, Missouri.
Logan Nutt, who is the program's sixth coach in as many years and replaces Scot Davis, had several reasons he was drawn to the job.
"I've really grown to love the area, and I know Woodland High School has had good programs in the past and I'm excited because it's close to home and I can still be around and watch SEMO, and I know we have good players that we bring back," Nutt said. "I talked to the principal and the superintendent and a bunch of the staff, and they're just the nicest people, and after I met all them I knew that I wanted to work at that school."
Nutt was an assistant men's basketball coach at Culver-Stockton College last season. He had served as a student coach for his dad at Southeast during the 2012-13 season after his basketball eligibility was completed the year before.
His brother and former Southeast point guard Lucas Nutt was named the new head boys basketball coach at Senath-Hornersville High School in April.
"I just heard about the job opening and I was just always looking to see if there was anything around that seemed like it could be a good opportunity for me to be a head coach," Nutt said. "My dream is to be a head coach, and I think I can do well with the players. I think I can help them improve their lives on and off the court, and it was a great opportunity for me to become a head coach for the first time and get a great experience working with great people and have a chance to win."
Nutt has had a few open gyms since he started last week and members of the team attended a team camp at Southeast Missouri State over the weekend.
"We did really well for the time that we'd put in," Nutt said. "I could see improvement already."
The Cardinals finished 11-13 last season after nearly pulling off an upset against second-seeded West County in the opening round of the Class 3 District 2 tournament.
Woodland advanced to the SCAA tournament championship game and returns SCAA first-team all-conference and All-Missourian team selection Garret Reynolds.
"I'm just very thankful and grateful to be the head coach at Woodland High School," Nutt said. "We have a chance to do big things and we know we can get this community involved and we will have an exciting team to watch. We hope to get the community involved as much as possible and be looking forward to having some fun and having a successful season."
