Oval-track racing takes a week off at Auto Tire and Parts Racepark Aug. 23, 24 and 25 for the Maxxis Grand National ATV Series, an event expected to feature big-name riders on the four-wheel racing series.

The three-day event is one of only six of its kind scheduled nationally this year.

The schedule starts Aug. 23 with the Shorttrack Nationals, an event for the pro division worth $1,000 to the winner. Riders that night will use the existing 3/8-mile oval track, which track officials say will mean speeds of up to 90 mph for top ATVs.

A day later the track hosts the TT Road Course Nationals, which will use the motocross track situated inside the oval track. A purse of $10,000 will be up for grabs Saturday.

The final day of the event will feature amateur competition finals.

Back in action

After being closed for about a month for repairs at the track, Fredericktown Raceway will reopen Friday with UMP late models, RAMS mini stocks, pro streets and pure streets.

Out of action

Sammy Potashnick of Sikeston didn't get a chance to qualify for last week's Bush Series race in Colorado because of a concussion he received in an off-the-track mishap Friday. Potashnick fell in the transporter on the way to the track from Charlotte, N.C., and hit his head. He was scheduled to drive Jay Robinson's No. 49 car.
