Jackson, Chaffee split Legion doubleheader

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Jackson and Chaffee split a non-district American Legion doubleheader late Saturday night, Chaffee winning the opener 4-1 and Jackson claiming the second game 5-1 in eight innings.

Chaffee's Tyler Nelson pitched all seven innings in the first game, allowing six hits, with five strikeouts and four walks. Joey Bickings had two hits and two RBIs for Chaffee.

Tim Davis took the loss, allowing six hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings, with six strikeouts and one walk. Jackson's Dusty Roberts had two hits.

In the second game, Jackson (11-6) scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Josh Snell got the win in relief after Roberts hurled five shutout innings. He allowed two hits, with six strikeouts and one walk. Josh Van de Ven led Jackson with three hits.

Chaffee's Jason Umfleet, who did not figure into the decision, allowed one run in seven innings.

Cape A's split two games at Dexter

DEXTER, Mo. -- The Cape Girardeau Sr. Babe Ruth A's (9-11) split a doubleheader with Dexter Sunday, winning 7-3 and losing 4-1. Both games were five innings.

Buddy Conrad notched the victory, allowing four hits, with three strikeouts and two walks. Michael Taylor led the A's with two hits.

The A's had just one hit in the second game. Tyrone Reece took the loss.

Titles decided in tennis tournament

JACKSON, Mo. -- Championships were decided in four divisions Sunday as the fifth annual Jackson Tennis Action Tournament concluded.

Jenni DeWitt won the Women's Open Singles title with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Autumn Dunivan.

Rob Hale captured the Men's Open Singles title by beating Ken Campbell 6-4, 6-4.

In Men's 'A' Singles, Tom Blair defeated Jay Roberts 6-4, 6-1.

In the Men's Open Doubles final, Bill Bradley and Lonnie Mobley beat Ken Campbell and John Davie 2-6, 7-6, 6-2.

Retiring Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron finished his career with his 7,141st trip to the winner's circle, his final ride a victory on Came Home in the $107,500 Affirmed Stakes on "Chris McCarron Day" at Hollywood Park.
