St. Louis Printers rally to beat Capahas 10-9
ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Printers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to hand the Cape Girardeau Craftsman Union Capahas a 10-9 defeat Saturday.
The Capahas (14-5) had scored five times in the top of the ninth to go ahead 9-8 before the Printers came back and won the game on a two-out, two-run double by Lance Cannizzaro.
Jake Alley started for the Capahas and went 2 2/3 innings before he left with arm trouble. He allowed six runs (five earned) and six hits.
Aaron Gurley faced one batter and retired him before also leaving with arm problems.
Craig Ringwald worked the next 5 1/3 innings and was effective, allowing three runs and four hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.
Denver Stuckey took the loss, giving up the winning run and two hits while retiring one batter.
Both teams had 13 hits. Tristen McDonald led the Capahas with three, Brian Hopkins doubled twice and Stuckey and Brad Simmons both added two hits.
Southeast Missouri State University player Dave Lawson had three hits for the Printers.
Riverdogs drop a pair to Southern Ill. Merchants
The Cape Girardeau Riverdogs lost a doubleheader to the Southern Illinois Merchants at Capaha Field Saturday, falling 4-3 and 3-0.
The Riverdogs (9-12) scored all their runs on the day in the first inning of the opener on a three-run homer by Josh West, who also doubled. Todd Friend added two of the Riverdogs' seven hits off Chris Holland.
Chris Reeves took the loss, allowing six hits and all four runs in five innings. He struck out three and walked one. Brent Sell gave up one hit in two scoreless innings, with three strikeouts and two walks.
Adam Hook then hurled a four-hit shutout, fanning six. Tatum Kitchen also fired a four-hitter for the Riverdogs, with six strikeouts and three walks. All three runs, which came in the fourth inning, were unearned.
Cape American Legion loses two at Crestwood
ST. LOUIS -- Cape Girardeau's Ford & Sons American Legion baseball team was dropped a doubleheader to Crestwood Saturday, losing 6-5 and 5-3.
Cape (9-9) had a 5-4 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning of the opener, but Crestwood scored two runs in its final at-bat to prevail.
Jeff Brosey pitched six innings, allowing four runs (two earned) and four hits, with five strikeouts and one walk. John Thies allowed two hits and both runs in the seventh to take the loss.
Cape had 10 hits, led by Timmy Wencewicz, who went 3-for-4, including a home run and double, good for three RBIs. Shane Kistner and Seth Hudson both had two hits.
Mark Wittenborn suffered the loss in the second game. In six innings, he allowed five runs (two earned) and five hits.
Ford & Sons had eight hits, led by Kistner and Chris Conrad with two each.
