J.L. Lewis shot a 9-under 63 to take the lead at 14 under midway through the Michelin Championship at Las Vegas.
On another windless day in the desert, the 44-year-old Lewis took a one-shot lead over Chez Reavie, Olin Browne and Alex Cejka with a round that included an eagle, six birdies and no bogeys on a friendly Bear's Best course.
Reavie, a 22-year-old who has yet to make an official dollar as a pro, shot a 64 at the home TPC at Summerlin course, capping his day with a spectacular finish to put him in contention. Reavie almost made a hole-in-one on the 17th, then followed it by stuffing a 9-iron from 161 yards on the final hole for eagle.
Browne shot a 64, and Cejka had a 65.
European PGA Tour
England's David Howell holed a 105-yard shot for an eagle Friday and finished with a 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Ryder Cup teammate Luke Donald after the second round of the Dunhill Links Championship in St. Andrews, Scotland.
Howell, who opened with a 65 on Thursday at Kingsbarns, had a 14-under 130 total. He holed out with a sand wedge on the par-4 18th, his ninth hole of the day on the Old Course. Donald also shot a 65 on the Old Course in the three-course event.
South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen was two strokes back after a 65 on the Old Course.
Ernie Els, who passed Tiger Woods for second place in the world rankings with his victory last week in the American Express Championship in Ireland, shot his second straight 68 to finish at 8 under. Top-ranked Vijay Singh was 6 under.
LPGA Tour
Liselotte Neumann shot her second straight 4-under 68 for a share of the second-round lead with Donna Andrews and Wales' Becky Morgan in the LPGA Asahi Ryokuken International Championship in North Augusta, S.C.
Neumann, the 1988 U.S. Women's Open champion, had just 22 putts in the round and holed a bunker shot for birdie on the 14th hole on the Mount Vintage Plantation course. Andrews also had a 68, and Morgan shot a 69.
Cristie Kerr (68), Laura Davies (69) and Jeong Jang (67) were two strokes behind the leaders at 6 under. Beth Daniel, a South Carolina native and Hall of Famer, was three shots behind after a 68.
Champions
Wayne Levi matched his best round on the Champions Tour and Walter Hall had his lowest score of the year, shooting 8-under 64s to share the first-round lead in the Administaff Small Business Classic in Spring, Texas.
Hall and Levi, coming off a victory Sunday in the Constellation Energy Classic in Hunt Valley, Md., each had eight birdies in bogey-free rounds in the inaugural tournament on the Augusta Pines Golf Club course.
Jim Dent opened with a 66 and Tom Kite was another stroke back along with Hale Irwin, John Harris and Jim Thorpe. Craig Stadler, attempting to match Chi Chi Rodriguez's 1987 tour record of for straight victories, shot a 69.
