To the editor:
Jamie Hall's summary of memories he and others had of the Christmas tournament was super. He referred to my memory of holding Notre Dame great Kenny Reiker to six points, however, full disclosure requires I would have never remembered that if I had not been asked to guard him again in a game later that season.
I knew I had been very lucky the previous time. My defensive skills were limited, perhaps non-existent. Kenny simply had an off night.
Thus, I accepted my charge to guard him with fear and trembling. My worst fears were realized.
Reiker scored a school-record 40 points. Had there been three-pointers then, the total would have neared 60.
I prefer to focus on the Christmas tournament memory exclusively and praise myself for a "defensive" performance for which I deserved no credit. But I realize that the root of that memory was Reiker's later record-shattering effort.
Maybe a public admission of the whole story will make me forget who was guarding Reiker when he set the record and allow me to remember only the Christmas tournament experience. If you read this, please help me repress the experience by never mentioning it.STEVE MOSLEY
