Leopold captures Woodland tourney

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Top-seed Leopold outlasted second-seed Bell City in three sets to claim the championship of the Woodland Tournament.

The Lady Wildcats took the first game 15-6 , fell 12-15 and then rallied from a 9-13 deficit in the third set.

"I'm proud of the girls for the way they came back to win," said Leopold coach Leanne Huffman. "It's a great way to start the season."

Leopold's championship run was led by Holly Jansen's nine kills and nine blocks, Kyla Horrell's five kills and 15 digs and Wendy Vandeven's 26 assists.

Oran downed host Woodland 9-15, 15-12, 15-9, for third place.

Zalma overcame Greenville 12-15, 15-7, 15-13, in the consolation match.

All-tournament selections were Jansen, Vandeven and Horrell of Leopold; Katie Spears, Whitney Abner and Katie Niemczyk of Bell City; Emily Davis and Danyel Farrell of Woodland; Melissa Fish and Marykay Hovis of Zalma; Maria Eftink of Oran and Emily Ross of Greenville.

Eagle Ridge Christian School lost in straight sets to Emmanuel Christian School of Farmington in its season opener.

Ashley Hughes had 18 assists and five service points for Eagle Ridge, while Amber Karnes contributed seven points, five digs and two kills.

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. -- Waynesville pushed across a last-minute touchdown to spoil Perryville's season opener.

The Pirates, trailing 14-6 after the first half, tied the game at 14-14 when tailback Jesse Whistler scored from four yards out and then ran in a two-point conversion.

Perryville's first score came on a three-yard pass play from Andrew Meyr to Dustin Weibrecht. The extra point attempt failed.

Whistler led the Pirates ground game with 76 yards on 19 carries.
