Scott County Legion drops tourney opener
The Scott County American Legion baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to De Soto in its opening game at the Twin Lakes Baseball Classic tournament in Mountain Home, Ark.
Scott County (8-4) had 10 hits to De Soto's five but couldn't recover from a 2-0, second-inning deficit.
Post 369 scored single runs in the third and fifth innings before falling one run short with a two-run bottom of the seventh.
Shane Menz, Trent Moses and Blake Dirnberger each had two hits for Scott County. Menz had two doubles.
Andy Stephens took the loss, allowing five hits and issuing six walks in seven innings. He struck out five and allowed three earned runs.
Scott County will continue pool play 1:30 p.m. today against Harrison, Ark.
Cape Girardeau split a home doubleheader with Mayfield (Ky.) on Wednesday.
Mayfield scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie in a 6-5 win in the opening game.
Jeremy Brinkmeyer took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs in a complete game. Brinkmeyer struck out three and walked three. Ty Craft had two RBIs for Cape's Ford & Sons, which was held to just four hits.
In the second game Ford & Sons used a five-run fifth inning to win 9-6.
Kirk Boeller, Brinkmeyer and Chris Brotherton had two hits apiece. Brinkmeyer had four RBIs. Brotherton pitched all seven innings for the win.
