ST. LOUIS -- Cape Central's girls captured the season-opening Oakville Tournament Thursday with a 58-30 victory over Francis Howell.

The Lady Tigers completed the round-robin format with a perfect 3-0 record, much to the delight of first-year coach Sheila Midgett.

"We're pretty pleased way things went," said Midgett. "We got the opportunity to see what we needed work on. I thought we played well at times, but we did see some things we need to work on and hopefully we'll get better as the season goes on. I'm very pleased with the effort."

Sarah Hyslop led the way for the Lady Tigers with 17 points while Rachel Spinks added 11. Point guard Megan McDonald led the team in rebounding for the second straight night with seven.

Ashley Blaske, 14 points, was the only Francis Howell player to score more than four points.

Central grabbed control from the start, holding a 17-7 lead after one quarter and a 36-18 advantage by halftime.

Francis Howell won the JV contest over Cape Central 37-28. The Central JV finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.

DELTA 89, EAST PRAIRIE 15

DELTA, Mo. -- The Lady Bobcats pounced on the Lady Eagles for their first win of the season.

Delta (1-2) rattled East Prairie early in the contest with full-court pressure to take a commanding 47-8 lead at the half.

Rebecca Cook and Rebecca Below led Delta with 31 and 27 points, respectively. Cook turned in a good all-round floor game with eight rebounds and seven assists, while Below led with nine boards.

Freshman Sarah M. Cook added 14 points for the Lady Bobcats.

KELLY 55, CHAFFEE 49

BENTON, Mo. -- Trailing 33-32 at the half, Kelly (2-0) came back to defeat upset-minded Chaffee.

Chaffee (0-2), which had controlled the tempo the first three stanzas, was down by only two points going into the final period.

"We didn't rebound in the fourth quarter," said Chaffee coach Tammy Brock, whose team was coming off a blow-out loss to Scott City Monday night, "but I was pleased with the kids' effort."

Bridgett Riley led the Lady Hawks with 24 points.

Jennifer Vandeven paced the Lady Red Devils with 25 points, including three treys, while Mallory Kiefer chipped in with 10.

Kelly's JV team, led by Monica Senciboy's 18 points, completed the sweep with a 51-42 win. Amy Holmes and Natalie Townsend shared scoring honors for Chaffee with 10 points each.

CHARLESTON 81, PORTAGEVILLE 44

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Charleston had five players reach double figures as it clobbered Portageville.

Missy Whitney led the way with 18, followed by Shay Ward with 15, Tyshanta Williams with 14, and Dre elle Mathis and Monisha Murray with 12 apiece.

The Lady Bluejays improved to 3-0.

BOYS BASKETBALL

JACKSON 79, POTOSI 36

FARMINGTON, Mo. -- Fifth-seeded Jackson rebounded from a season-opening loss to plaster No. 8 Potosi Thursday night in the consolation semifinals of the Farmington Tournament.

Jackson had four players in double figures and nine of its 11 varsity players scored.

Seth McDowell led Jackson with 15 points, followed by Nathan Brown and Jeffrey Beck with 12 each and Lance Bollinger with 10.

"The guys played tremendous," said Jackson coach Mike Kiehne. "We were very fundamental defensively. We struggled early with our shot, but in the second quarter we came out and scored 28 off our press and we limited them to one shot and done."

Jackson (1-1) will play the winner of Fredericktown and North County in the consolation finals at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Woodland Tournament

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Meadow Heights pulled off another upset and Advance posted a blowout to set up a Panther-Hornet showdown for the championship of the Woodland Tournament.

Meadow Heights, the sixth seed, improved to 3-0 with a 71-64 victory over No. 2 Woodland.

The Panthers are 3-0.

Top-seeded Advance had seven players score in double figures in a 103-63 pasting of No. 5 Delta.

In a consolation semifinal, third-seeded Leopold knocked off No. 7 Bloomfield 45-42.

For Meadow Heights, Josh Mayfield scored a game-high 27 points, followed by Derek Collier with 15 and Josh Fulton with 10.

Woodland (1-1) was paced by Travis Benfield's 19 points. Alex VanGennip chipped in with 14.

For Advance, Andrew Jenkins (18), Zach Hudson (16), Cain Kelley (14), Eric O'Hare (13), Jason Barr (13), Jordyn Hazel (11) and Jared Ritter (10) all reached double figures. Lance Kinder and Craig Bock both had 20 for Delta.

In the consolation game, Scott VanGennip scored 20 and Josh Vandeven had 14 for Leopold, while Adam Kingery scored 23 to lead Bloomfield.

Meadow Heights and Advance will play for the championship at 8 p.m. tonight. Woodland and Delta will play for third at 6:30 and Leopold and Oak Ridge will square off for the consolation title at 5.

Oran Tournament

ORAN, Mo. -- The top two teams advanced to tonight's championship game as top-seeded Twin Rivers and No. 2 Richland won semifinal games Thursday night.

Top-seeded Twin Rivers rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat No. 4 Oran 52-44, while No. 2 Richland, also down at halftime, pulled out a 76-72 victory over No. 3 Bell City.

In consolation play, No. 5 Kelly bounced back from a loss to Oran with an 88-61 victory over No. 8 North Pemiscot.

In the first semifinal, Oran took a 27-21 lead into the second half, but Twin Rivers outscored the Eagles 19-8 in the third quarter for a 40-35 lead. The Royals, who got 14 points from Steve Deken, pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Ryne Wood and Nathan Seyer each scored 15 points for Oran.

The other semifinal was tied 56-56 entering the fourth quarter, but Richland outscored a game Cub squad 20-16 over the final eight minutes. Eric Henry scored a game-high 34 points for Bell City, which led 38-34 at halftime. No other Cub scored in double figures.

Sherome Cole paced Richland with 30 points and teammate Travis Nelson added 19.

Kelly rolled out to a 46-23 halftime lead en route to its consolation victory. Tyler Schlosser and Michael Romas each scored 22 points for the Hawks.

In tonight's action, Twin Rivers will face Richland for the title at 8 p.m.; Oran and Bell City will meet for third at 6:30; and Kelly and Scott Central will meet for the consolation title at 5.

Wrestling

JACKSON 66, NEW MADRID 12

JACKSON, Mo. -- The Indian grapplers penned the Eagles in the season opener for both squads.

"Considering it was the first dual of the year, I thought both teams wrestled pretty well," said Jackson coach Steve Wachter, "particularly after a long football season."

Oddly, excluding five forfeits, all matches were won on pins.

Jackson's JV was also victorious by a 66-18 margin.
