Gross struck out two, walked none and faced just two over the minimum.

"She pitched great," said Central coach Amy Blattel. "No. 1, she was ahead of the batters. And when she did get behind, she came right at them. And we played good defense behind her."

Ashley Snell suffered the loss. She allowed eight hits, but all three runs she allowed were unearned.

Offensively for Central (5-2), Jessica McDonald went 2-for-3 with a double, Alex Wieser went 2-for-3 and Tricia Klipfel doubled.

Jackson's junior varsity claimed a 5-1 win.

Kelly 6, Notre Dame 4

BENTON, Mo. -- Despite being outhit 10-7, the Kelly High Lady Hawks' softball managed a victory over Notre Dame.

Marissa Essner picked up the win. She went six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits, two walks and six strikeouts.

Kelly also got three hits from Megan Beggs.

For Notre Dame (2-3), Mika Williamson suffered the loss. She went six innings and gave up six runs on seven hits, three strikeouts and three walks.

Williamson and Ashley Reinagel had two hits apiece.

"We were right there with them and that was encouraging," said Notre Dame coach Chris Janet. "We're getting better."

St. Vincent 13, De Soto 5

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- After suffering some close losses this season, the Lady Indians found the win column in impressive fashion.

Julie Hager picked up the win, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on six hits and five walks. Steph Brown went 2 2/3 innings and allowed no runs, while giving up two hits and a walk while striking out one.

Jean Brown and Nicole Hadler each had two hits, two runs and two runs batted in for St. Vincent (1-3). Kindle Ernst went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, Amanda Carron went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Amanda Richardet scored three runs and had two RBIs.

VOLLEYBALL

Woodland Tournament

Zalma split games with Leopold and swept Woodland, while Notre Dame and Bell City also split in pool play of the Woodland Tournament Wednesday night.

Zalma (2-0-1) knocked off Woodland 15-10 and 15-10. In that match, Zalma's Amber Buehler and Carrie Pixley had three kills apiece, while Selena Slaugher had 15 assists.

Against Leopold, Zalma fell in the first set 15-8, but managed a 15-13 win in the second set.

Pixley had five kills and seven points with two aces. Buehler had three kills. Erika Campbell had three kills and Slaughter provided 18 assists.

For Leopold, Holly Jansen led the Lady Wildcats (1-0-1) with 12 kills against Zalma, while Courtney Wesbecher had four and Jessica Bollinger had three. Laura Jansen had 12 assists and Wendy Vandeven had nine.

Notre Dame split with Bell City 8-15 and 15-6.

For the Lady Bulldogs, Libby Beussink had 10 points, while Katie Canfield had 10 points as well along with eight assists. Ashley Millham had a team-high five kills, while Lynne Obermiller and Ali Tyson had three each.

CROSS COUNTRY

ND takes sixth

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- In its first meet of the season, Notre Dame's boys varsity cross country team took sixth place in a nine-team invitational Wednesday.

Notre Dame posted a team score of 178 on the 3.1 mile course. Figuring into the scoring were David Unterreiner (17th, 20:25), Matt Frey (24th, 21:20), Marcus Legrand (34th, 22:15), David Jaquith (47th, 24:34), Jeff Lage (56th, 25:57) and Shawn McLain (64th, 32:06).

Notre Dame's Sara Unterreiner took 20th in the girls' competition. She ran the 2.5 mile course in 18:53.
