SPRINGFIELD -- Cape Girardeau Central's Liz Russell, Sarah Chaudhari and Jessica Burns came up a little short in their attempt to advance in the state high school girls tennis championships Friday, with all three being eliminated from competition after each lost two of their three matches."Up here it's just a whole different ballgame," said Cape Central coach Anne Slattery. "We played pretty well and had our chances, particularly in the doubles, but it's just tough to lose."Russell, Cape Central's state singles representative, lost her opening match against St. Joseph Central's Gena Lindsay 6-1, 6-3. Russell rebounded in the second match to defeat Hazelwood East's Ebony Palmer 6-2, 6-0. Russell's chances to advance were dashed by losing her third match to Oak Park's Laura Friedrich 6-0, 6-2.In doubles competition, Chaudhari and Burns didnt fare much better, despite opening with a victory over Hazelwood Centrals Halleh Ghodrati-Brook Hildwein 6-0, 6-1. Chaudhari and Burns lost a close second match with a second-set tie-breaker to Jill Collins and Sara Kula from Lafayette 6-2, 7-6, (7-1).Shannon Goebel and Jessica Tobin from Ursuline Academy ended Chaudhari's and Burns' bid by defeating the pair in their third match of the day 6-3, 6-4.
BOYS SOCCERNotre Dame 6, Washington 1O'FALLON -- Notre Dame grabbed third place in the St. Dominic Tournament by rolling past Washington in the third-place game.Washington scored the first goal 10 minutes into the match, but the Bulldogs evened the score nine minutes later on an unassisted goal by Chris Dirnberger.Dirnberger went on to tally another goal and one assist for Notre Dame. Tyler Cuba, Adam Obermiller, Scott Wittenborn and Oliver Sanders all added single goals. Tommy Wencewicz, Sanders and Brian Glosemeyer all added assists."We played well all week," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn, whose squad is 17-4-1. "Tonight we had a lot of chances to score, and it was a good win for us.?
CROSS COUNTRYClayton InvitationalCLAYTON -- Susan Judd was Notre Dame's lone medalist during the tough meet that included a host of top Class 3A teams."We faced some excellent competition," said Notre Dame coach Wayne Nenninger, whose squads participates in Class 2A. "Susan is having an excellent season. She's really running well."Notre Dame's girls were 17th out of 20 teams. Judd placed 13th in a time of 20:52.Also comprising the Lady Bulldog team score: Sarah Unterreiner (61st, 22:35), Jean Stoverink (111th, 23:45), Annette Horrell (138th, 25:10) and Susan Layton (148th, 26:31).Notre Dame's boys were 18th out of 22 squads. Bulldog finishers were: Rick Smith (54th, 18:21), David Unterreiner (77th, 18:50), Matt Frey (96th, 19:18), Jaime Higgins (106th, 19:27) and Marcus LeGrand (123rd, 19:50).VOLLEYBALLLeopold 15-15Bell City 2-3BELL CITY -- Leopold tuned up for districts with an easy victory as the Lady Wildcats improved to 21-5.Kyla Horrell had six kills and six digs to pace Leopold, which got three kills from Emily Broshuis and 14 assists, two kills and six digs from Sarah Gowen.Leopold won the JV match 16-14, 15-9.Chaffee 15-15Caruthersville 9-1CHAFFEE -- In a match from Thursday, Chaffee won handily and improved to 6-14-2.Jill Little had seven kills and Amy Burnett recorded 18 assists to lead the Lady Red Devils.
