SIKESTON -- Cape Girardeau Central High's girls tennis team captured district honors Thursday and joined Jackson in qualifying players for the state meet.
The Lady Tigers won the seven-team Class 4A, District 1 Tournament hosted by Sikeston with 21 1/2 points. Summit was second (14), followed by Jackson (13), Oakville (12 1/2) and Poplar Bluff (9). Farmington and Sikeston did not score.
Central will host the four-team sectional team competition Oct. 18. Summit will also compete, along with two other teams yet to be determined from the St. Louis area.
Jackson singles player Lena Steinberg and Central's doubles teams of Lisa Ahstrom-Summer Chaudhari and Lara Golike-Rachelle Thomas all qualified for the state individual meet set for Oct. 24-25 in Springfield.
Steinberg won the singles title, beating Oakville's Amanda Black 7-5, 6-0 in the finals.
The doubles final was a Cape affair as Ahstrom and Chaudhari downed Golike and Thomas 6-4, 6-1 for the title.
Jackson's doubles team of Sarah Culbertson and Lauren Young finished fourth.
"It rained three times and we started late, but once we got going I was really pleased," said Central coach Annette Slattery.

Notre Dame 1, Jackson 1
JACKSON -- Notre Dame and Jackson took part in an exciting, well-played game Thursday that did not produce a winner. The Bulldogs are now 11-2-3 while the Indians are 8-3-5.
"Both teams played really well," said Jackson coach Bonnie Knowlan. "It was just a good game."
Said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn, "Both teams played well and had some good chances to score. Our goalie, Colin Vandergraaf, made some good saves and probably had his best game of the year."
After a scoreless first half, Brandon Blattel put Jackson ahead, with an assist from Nathan Windeknecht.
Notre Dame tied the contest with about 20 minutes remaining on Ryan Fenwick's goal, with Zach Miller assisting.
Thursday's JV game also ended in a 2-2 deadlock. Matt Bollinger and Luke Oliver scored for Notre Dame (8-1-2) while Oliver and Nathan Essner had assists. Tyler Stearns had both goals for Jackson, with Jimmy Sievers and Noah Reese assisting.
Both teams will return to action Saturday on the road, Notre Dame playing at Borgia (11 a.m.) and Jackson facing Springfield Glendale at the St. Louis Soccer Park (11 a.m.).
Cape Central 10, Sikeston 1
Central's Tigers avenged their first-ever loss to Sikeston earlier this season by destroying the visiting Bulldogs Thursday.
Nine players scored goals for the Tigers, who won their third straight game and improved to 6-11-2. Central has outscored the opposition 23-2 during its three-game winning streak.
"We're playing with a lot more confidence," said Central coach Tom Doyle. "Beating a good Parkway West team (Wednesday) helped. And we've been building for this game since last time when they beat us.
"I think they're finally starting to realize they don't have to do it all themselves, they have teammates there."
Mike Stone scored two goals while Brett McNabb, Josh Ferguson, Nathan Gibbar, Mike Pickett, Brad Gaydos, Chris Cole, Pat Dunham and Luke Fuemmeler all added one.
McNabb had two assists, with Ferguson, Dunham, Jason Wicks and Josh Miller all getting one.
The JV game ended in a 1-1 tie. Matt Kennard scored for Central's JV (3-4-3).
Central will return to action Saturday, facing Springfield Glendale in an 8:45 a.m. game at the St. Louis Soccer Park.
VOLLEYBALL
Jackson 15-13-15
Leopold 12-15-8
JACKSON -- Jackson picked up a big victory at home Thursday night by handing Leopold a rare defeat.
The Lady Indians improved to 14-6-4 while the Lady Wildcats fell to 16-2-1.
"It was a very good match. We played really tough," said Jackson coach Nancy Ellis. "We came out in the third game and jumped right on top and were able to keep pushing."
A host of players had impressive matches for the Lady Indians, led by Chrissi Glastetter, who had a triple-double with 14 kills, 11 digs and 11 blocks.
Also standing out were Heather Brown (13 assists), Jennifer Ellis (11 assists), Valerie Jansen (10 kills, 12 digs), Andrea Koeper (7 kills, 18 digs), Becky King (12 blocks), Jamie Heitz (11 blocks) and Sara Nothdurft (11 blocks).
Meadow Heights won the JV match 15-9, 15-7 while the freshmen teams split, Jackson winning 15-8 and losing 15-7.
JR. HIGH FOOTBALL
Jackson teams split
JACKSON -- Jackson Junior High teams split a pair of games Thursday, the eighth grade beating Charleston 14-12 and the freshmen losing to New Madrid 40-7.
No individual details were available.
Jackson's eighth grade is 3-1 while the freshmen are 2-3. Both teams will host Perryville next Thursday.
