LADY TIGER SWIMMERS DROP SEASON-OPENING DUAL MEET

ST. LOUIS -- Cape Central's girls swim team captured four first-place finishes but dropped its season-opening dual meet 114-69 against Parkway Central Tuesday.

Mary Beth Owen accounted for two of the victories. She touched the wall first in the 500 freestyle in a school-record and state-qualifying time of 5:09.91. She also won the 200 IM in a state-qualifying time of 2:12.98. Jean Maguire also posted a state-qualifying time in winning the 100 freestyle in :57.93.

Owen and Maguire were both state qualifiers last year.

"It was nice for them to get off to a good start," said Cape Central coach Dayna Powell.

Central also had a 1-2-3 finish in diving, led by Sara Sprigg. (156.35).

"We have a lot of girls that don't have a lot of experience, but they're working hard," said Powell. "Hopefully it will be like the boys and we'll see a steady improvement over the course of the season."
