Lady Mules hand 67-43 loss to JHS

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- In a game of the area's Class 4A heavyweights, Poplar Bluff knocked the Jackson High Lady Indians out, 67-43, in a SEMO Conference game Wednesday night.

Jackson (2-2, 1-0), which took third at state last year after beating Poplar Bluff in the district championship game, was held to less than 10 points in each of the first three quarters.

Poplar Bluff (4-0, 1-0) erupted to a 19-6 advantage after the first quarter and took a commanding 36-15 lead into halftime.

Jenna Leet, 16 points, was the only player to reach double figures for Jackson.

Nicole Rivers led Poplar Bluff with 17 points, followed by Jessica Wilson with 12.

Chaffee Tournament

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Second-seeded Delta posted a somewhat surprising blowout victory over No. 3 Scott City 52-32 in the semifinal round of the Chaffee Tournament.

Ironically, Scott City lost to the same coach it forced out last spring. Randy White coached 17 years at Scott City.

"The only thing on our mind was to be in the finals against Sikeston," White said.

The championship game will be played at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Lady Bobcats (3-2) were led by Sarah Cook's 18 points. Sarah Jo Cook followed with 15, while Rebecca Below posted 12. Rebeeca Cook had 11 assists.

Loren Groves scored 14 to lead the Lady Rams.

Delta led 18-14 at halftime and 33-24 after the third quarter, then pulled away with a 19-8 advantage in the fourth.

Oran knocked off Portageville 57-38 in a consolation semifinal.

Ashley Dirnberger broke loose for 26 points, while teammate Maria Eftink added 13.

Oran, which will play Chaffee at 1:30 p.m. for the consolation title, led 35-16 at halftime.

SCOTT CO. CENTRAL 99, EAST CARTER CO. 56

MORLEY, Mo. -- Janet Penrod scored 28 points and teammate Jennifer Hoots had 26 as Scott County Central steamrolled East Carter County.

Brittany Godwin chipped in with 14 for the Bravettes (2-1), while Stephanie Maney added 10.

Scott Central led 35-12 at halftime, then outscored East Carter 36-30 in a wild third quarter.

FREDERICKTOWN 52, ST. VINCENT 38

FREDERICKTOWN, Mo. -- Nikki Tucker netted 24 points as Fredericktown rolled past St. Vincent.

Jessica Johnson added 12 points for the Lady Cats, who led 25-17 at halftime and 39-24 after three quarters.

Nicole Hadler scored 14 points for St. Vincent (3-3) and Chelsey Brown tallied 13, but they were the only Squaws with more than four points.

PERRYVILLE 73, NMCC 38

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- April Lorenz and Amanda Nuyt combined for 43 points to lead the Lady Pirates to its third win against one loss.

Lorenz scored 22 points and led in rebounds with nine, while the hot-shooting Nuyt hit seven 3-pointers for 21 points. Nuyt is shooting over 50 percent from beyond the arc for the season.

BOYS BASKETBALL Sikeston Tournament

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Third-seeded Poplar Bluff needed overtime to knock off No. 7 Kennett 74-69 in the semifinals of the Sikeston Tournament.

Kennett's Tyree Goolsby nailed a three at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Tony Webb led Poplar Bluff with 23 points.

In a consolation semifinal, No. 2 Charleston knocked off Doniphan 75-64.

Jordy Mixon, recently named an all-state football performer, scored 29 points to lead the Bluejays. Jemorrio Betts added 14, followed by Kewain Gant with 12 and Dontay Clark 10.

Poplar Bluff will play top-seeded New Madrid -- the two-time defending Class 3A champions -- for the title at 8:30 tonight. No. 5 Blytheville, Ark. and No. 7 Kennett will play for third place at 7 and Charleston will take on No. 4 Sikeston for the consolation trophy at 5:30.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

PATTON, Mo. -- Notre Dame claimed the championship of the Meadow Heights Tournament, knocking off Woodland 56-46 in the title game.

Ste. Genevieve defeated Fredericktown 67-53 for third place and Meadow Heights won the consolation championship 63-61 over St. Vincent.
