In his first season as the coach of the Oran girls basketball team, Adrian Eftink had no seniors to help lead the team through a 3-18 campaign.

But in his second year at the helm, Eftink has three seniors on the squad and two underclassmen returning as starters that should help turn things around.

"The seniors bring me a little more experience than I had last year," said Eftink. "All three are stepping up -- and stepping in -- to handle the leadership roles."

Seniors Lindi Prindle (5-2), Britni Massey (5-6) and Audrey Mosebach (5-6) will all see plenty of time after sitting out last season.

"All three played as sophomores and also started some," Eftink said.

Sophomores Kelly Wheeler (5-5) and Sara Heisserer (5-10) return to the lineup after starting last year as freshmen.

Wheeler averaged about five points per game at forward and Heisserer was named to the all-conference team as a center. Heisserer averaged about 10 points and 10 rebounds a game.

"Those two girls are pretty good offensive threats," said Eftink. "They're the lone returning starters from last year."

Junior Angela Todt (5-7) will also battle Moesbach for a starting post position.

"Those two girls may rotate in and out of the post," Eftink said.

The Lady Eagles also have some talented freshmen that may work themselves up to the varsity as the season progresses.

"We'll have a decent JV," Eftink said. "But right now its too early to say who might move up and help us on varsity."

The main concern for Eftink is getting the Lady Eagles in a winning state of mind.

"I'd like to finish around .500," Eftink said. "If everybody comes together it could happen. I think we're a competitive team."

The Lady Eagles have shown the signs of getting over the hump with some intense practices.

"We're not going to talent anybody to death, but we'll hustle," said Eftink. "The girls are doing well as we're getting the offense and defense (schemes) in. They're working hard."

With Scott County Central and Delta returning a lot of talent in its district, Oran's hopes of a district title may prove tough.

Said Eftink: "It's going to be a tough district."

The Lady Eagles opened the season at home Monday against Charleston.
