KENNETT – After the dust settled at the Kennett Country Club last Friday, the eighth annual Kennett Athletics 4-Person Scramble raised over $26,000 to go towards facility and equipment upgrades for each athletic team in the Kennett School District.

“It just seems like people have a good time at this thing,” Kennett High School athletic director Jim Vaughan said. “They can enjoy themselves, and at the same time understand how important the proceeds from this tournament are. It’s just such a beneficial event all the way around.”

More importantly, enough money was raised to fund several projects throughout the district, benefiting multiple athletic programs along the way.

In past years, the tournament has funded projects like tennis court spectator stands, multiple scoreboards, batting machines and cages, equipment sheds, volleyball net systems and a spike machine, repairs to the shot put and discus areas and new hurdles for the track and field team, signage for locker rooms and the football field house, and much more.

“It’s the biggest we’ve ever had,” Vaughan said. “We’ve had 24 teams before, but we got to 25 this year, and we had over $18,000 in sponsorships alone. That support is phenomenal, and it’s almost overwhelming.”

With 25 total teams, seven holes were stacked and the course was full, but Vaughan explained that once things got going, “it was impressively smooth.”

Other events like the yearly 50/50 drawing, a silent auction and a number of games such as a double your money hole and a long drive competition raised more money, and gave others the opportunity to walk away with a prize regardless of their golf game.

Next, Vaughan will reach out to each head coach to solicit their ideas and their needs, and funds will be distributed based on each program’s needs. Each year, he hopes to gear the funds toward improvements that benefit multiple programs, rather than providing new gear for an individual team.

“Kennett athletics is super appreciative of how this has grown, the support that we continue gain from it, and the projects that we’re able to do,” he said. “It’s hugely beneficial for us, because this golf tournament has given us the ability to do projects that we would not have otherwise been able to budget for.”

Vaughan would also like to thank all of the tournament’s sponsors on behalf of all Kennett athletics.

Major sponsors of the event included Acrisure, Baker Implement, C & S Cleaning Supplies, Central States Bus, FCC Behavioral Health, Ford, Gamble-Bedwell Printing LLC, Glen Sain Chevrolet & GMC, Jostens, Kennett Trust Bank, L.
