KELSO, Mo. -- Kelso Connection connected just enough.

Kelso's men's fast-pitch softball team used a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to slip past Elkville, Ill. 1-0 in the first round of the Kelso Klassic Friday night.

Tommy Jansen picked up the win, throwing a three-hitter and striking out five.

In another game, Black Gold (Hermann, Mo.) defeated Pomen (Memphis) 2-1 in eight innings.

Eric Steinbeck was the winning pitcher and also got the got the game-winning hit.

Jim Butler, a 54-year old, was the tough-luck loser.

Ballard Co. 5, Cape Sr. Legion 4

BALLARD CO., Ky. -- The Cape Ford & Sons American Legion team dropped to 3-5, losing the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Luke Johnson suffered the loss in five innings of relief. He allowed five runs, two earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out five.

Mark Wittenborn pitched four innings and allowed no runs on three hits while striking out three.

Justin Welker had two of Cape's seven hits.

In Thursday's games, Cape swept Jackson by scores of 5-3 and 9-7.

Cape Jr. Legion 13-5, Festus 2-2

FESTUS, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau's Best Mortgage Junior Legion remained unbeaten on the season with a doubleheader sweep.

Three Best Mortgage pitchers combined to allow just seven hits on the night as Cape Junior Legion improved to 15-0 on the season.

Jacob Yarbrough pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing three hits, striking out four and walking one.

Best Mortgage banged out 18 hits with Aaron Dohogne leading the way with a 4-for-5 performance. Seth Hudson, Chris Conrad and Matt Wulfers had three hits apiece.

Blake Urhahn picked up the win in the nightcap, getting one-hit relief from Hudson. Urhahn allowed three hits over the first 4 1-3 innings while Hudson hurled the final 2 2-3 innings.

Colin Schermann led an 11-hit attack with three hits. Hudson, Conrad and Dohogne had two hits each.

Scott City Sr. Babe Ruth splits

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Scott City's Senior Babe Ruth dropped the opener of a doubleheader with Poplar Bluff 8-5, but won the nightcap 6-4 Thursday night.

Jordan Comer and Doug Kuenert each had two hits for Scott City (3-3) in the opener.

Daniel Braun had a pair of hits in the nightcap, including a double and three RBIs.

Tyler Ward picked up the win on the mound for Scott City.
