ST. LOUIS — Kelly senior Tara Johnson was missing a portion of her jewelry Saturday morning.

But Johnson did so on purpose as she was without her watch at the 46th annual Hancock Invitational cross country meet at Jefferson Barracks Park.

"It's the first meet in which I didn't have on a watch," Johnson said. "I told my coaches and my teammates that I didn't want to know my time during the race. I just wanted to catch the girls in front of me."

Johnson would catch all but three of them, finishing fourth in the Class 1-2A meet with a time of 21 minutes, 19.07 seconds.

"I felt I ran pretty well," Johnson said. "I had the same time here that I had on the flat course at home. I get to run against a lot of the same girls I will at state here. How you fare here usually ties in with how you do at state."

Johnson, who will be running next on her 18th birthday next Saturday at the Notre Dame Invitational, finished 17th at state last year.

"I really want a top-five finish this year, although I would be OK with the top 10," Johnson said. "I really want to do well for my last race."

Johnson was the only Kelly medalist for the girls, although the Hawks boys had a pair of top-10 finishers as Cody Kern was fourth and Tommy Bridges was seventh.

The top 30 runners earned medals, and Woodland had one girl and two boys medal. Molly Arnzen finished one place behind Johnson, finishing fifth in the Class 1-2A meet. Corey Chapman (26th) and Jody Scherer (27th) earned medals for the Woodland boys.

The Central girls finished second as a team in the Class 4 meet. The Tigers were led by a one-two finish by Veronica Schabbing and Mary Dohogne. Brittany Moreland was the other Tigers medalist. She finished 12th.

Jackson's Tori Parry had a good day, finishing ninth in the Class 4 event. The Indians had a pair of medalists in the boys Class 4 event. Greg Gibson matched Parry with a ninth-place finish, while Cody Green was 17th.
