Kelly senior Kalie Hughes pitched a perfect game in a 7-0 softball victory on Thursday over visiting Central.

Hughes, who also pitched a no-hitter against Chaffee earlier this season, struck out 12 over seven innings to improve to 4-0. Kelly is 4-0 overall.

"She has really stepped it up," Kelly coach Rhonda Ratledge said. "She's done an outstanding job on the mound, and she's enjoying it."

Sarah Ruff went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Kelly's offense.

Kelsy Holloway pitched into the fifth and took the loss.

Jackson outhit the Mules 10-9 but fell at home.

Poplar Bluff broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the seventh.

Notre Dame Softballfest

Notre Dame and Park Hills Central each went 2-0 in pool play on Thursday to open the Notre Dame Softballfest.

The Bulldogs (4-0) allowed just one hit while winning a pair of 10-0 games. Beth Schnurbusch no-hit St. Pius, allowing only a leadoff walk. Miranda Schlosser followed with a one-hitter in Notre Dame's 10-0 win over Chaffee, with only the leadoff hitter reaching on a single.

Paris Burger had two of Notre Dame's eight hits against St. Pius. Schlosser had two hits and struck out 12 against the Red Devils (4-4). Heather Menz added two hits against Chaffee.

Park Hills Central beat St. Pius 12-2 in six innings and beat Chaffee 3-2 in eight innings. Sarah Benton pitched the eighth and took the loss for Chaffee. Rachel Hendrix and Madelyn Kiefer had two hits apiece for the Red Devils.

Pool play will resume today. Notre Dame wil face Park Hills on Saturday for a spot in the semifinals.

SOCCER Notre Dame Soccerfest

Jackson's soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 win over St. Pius on Thursday, while Notre Dame rolled 6-1 over Sikeston and Central was upset 2-1 by Marion (Ill.) in the opening round of the Notre Dame Soccerfest at Notre Dame Regional High School.

Defending champion Carbondale fell to Poplar Bluff 2-1 in the other quarterfinal. Jackson will face St. Pius in a semifinal at 5:30 p.m. today, and Notre Dame will face Poplar Bluff at 7:30.

Andrew Lysell struck first for Jackson with a goal midway through the opening half, and Chris Crossett added the second goal midway through the second half. Spencer McCormack had both assists, and Tyler Holman made six saves for the shutout.

Notre Dame, which has lost to Sikeston in the district finals the past two seasons, jumped out to a 5-1 lead at the half. Ty Williams led the Bulldogs with a hat trick, Abe Dirnberger added two goals and Jack Wedemeier added a goal.

Ryan Willen (2), Wedemeier (2), J.P. Thompson and John Unterreiner had assists.

Central led early on a Lucian Johnson goal 9 minutes into the game, but Marion tied the score with 2 minutes remaining in the first half and scored late to grab the win.

VOLLEYBALL

Notre Dame 12 25 15 Farmington 25 23 25

Notre Dame fell in three games on the road.

Ashley Nenninger led the Bulldogs (0-2) with 10 kills. Meridith Medlin added 12 assists, Haley Bohnert had nine digs, Emily Matthews had five kills and Rachel Phillips had three ace serves.

JV -- Notre Dame won in two.

Freshman -- Notre Dame won in two.

Jackson 11 13 Dexter 25 25

DeDe Whitlow had six digs and Megan Spooler added five digs as Jackson lost at home.

The Indians fell to 0-2.

Woodland Tournament

Top-seeded Leopold and No. 3 Woodland picked up victories to advance to the finals of the Woodland Tournament.

Leopold cruised by No. 3 Zalma 25-6, 25-12. The host Cardinals got by No. 2 Meadow Heights 19-25, 25-23, 25-19.

In the consolation bracket, Oran beat Chaffee 25-16, 25-20 and Oak Ridge beat Greenville 25-12, 25-16.

The finals are 7:30 p.m. today.

CROSS COUNTRY Chester Invitational

Saxony Lutheran ran a junior varsity squad at the Chester Invitational, a varsity meet, and brought home first place.

Peter Winningham, a varsity runner who was running down to make up for a meet he will miss later in the season, finished first overall in 17:38. Sophomores Andrew Etzold, Bryant Steffens and Sam Kluesner all finished in the top seven.
