Kelly teams win district openers

The Kelly boys basketball team opened the Class 3 District 2 tournament Saturday with a 66-27 win over host Greenville.

Kendal Deason led top-seeded Kelly (20-5) with 23 points, and Kent Deason added 15.

Kelly will face the winner of the East Prairie/Puxico winner on Thursday in the semifinals.

In another quarterfinal game at Greenville, No. 2 Charleston routed No. 7 Woodland 94-49. Seth Gaines led the Cardinals (9-15) with 26 points, and Cody McCraw had 18.

Class 2 District 2

Advance was the only local team to move on at the Class 2 District 2 tournament at Bloomfield.

The No. 3 Hornets defeated Richland 78-48. Meadow Heights, the fifth seed, fell to Ellington 72-62 in another quarterfinal game. Chaffee, the No. 9 seed, fell to East Carter 63-49 in a play-in game.

Advance will face No. 2 South Iron at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the semifinals.

Kelly Essner scored 21 points and April Rocket added 20 points to lead Kelly (22-4) to a win in the Class 3 District tournament.

The top-seeded Hornets will play the winner of the Charleston/Woodland game in the semifinal round Friday.
