CHAFFEE -- Last Thursday, Kelly High's girls basketball team had trouble dispensing with pesky Chaffee and won only by nine, 70-61.

A week later in a semifinal game in the Chaffee Tournament, Kelly faced no such difficulties. The Lady Hawks led 19-3 after one quarter and sailed to a 59-21 victory.

Kelly was led by Marissa Essner's game-high 18 points; Bridgette Riley had 14 and Audrey Burford added 12.

In a consolation game Thursday, Oran pounded Portageville 45-18.

Sara Heisserer scored 21 points for Oran.

New Madrid 51, Perryville 44

NEW MADRID -- A good Day proved too much for the Lady Pirates Thursday night.

New Madrid, powered by 30 points by senior Shayla Day, held off Perryville, which fell to 2-3.

"We tried our best to defend her," said Perryville coach Vicki Lohmann. "We played in front of her and behind her. She's just a great leaper and can play some ball."

No other Lady Eagle scored more than six points.

Perryville's attack was more balanced as Jamie Amberger scored 15 points and Tiffany Perkins netted 12.

New Madrid led 26-18 at halftime and took a 34-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

New Madrid, which attempted 43 free throws, outscored Perryville 23-10 at the free-throw line. The Lady Pirates committed 30 fouls, with three players fouling out.

East Carter Co. 42, Scott Co. Central 41

ELLSINORE -- Scott County Central missed a 15-footer from the baseline at the buzzer and fell to East Carter County.

The game was tied 32-32 entering the final quarter.

Scott County Central dropped to 1-3. Ashley Whitson led the team with 23 points.

JACKSON -- Jackson won the first 11 matches en route to a rout of Windsor.

The Indians improved to 2-0 in duals.

Freshman basketball

Cape Central's 9th-grade boys teams posted a pair of victories over De Soto Thursday.

The `A' team won 49-19 as Jordan White finished in double-figure scoring for Central. The Tigers' `B' team won 60-22. Adrian Brown, 19 points, and Darnelius Harris, 15, both finished in double figures.
