Kelly edges Chaffee to advance

Seventh-seeded Kelly moved on to the consolation finals by beating No. 5 Chaffee, while No. 6 Notre Dame dropped a consolation semifinal game Saturday in the SEMO Conference tournament.

Kelly, which had a bye into the consolation semifinals, knocked off Chaffee 13-9.

Notre Dame lost 6-4 to Kennett in the other consolation semifinal after beating Poplar Bluff 10-0 earlier in the day.

The Hawks took advantage of Chaffee's seven errors and 14 walks to get by the Red Devils. Chris Hanback and Josh Steger had three hits apiece for Chaffee (12-8) in the loss.

Adam Uhrhan threw an eight-inning complete game in Chaffee's 4-3 win over New Madrid County Central in consolation play earlier Saturday. Uhrhan walked six, struck out six and allowed two earned runs.

Notre Dame's two games could not have been much different. The Bulldogs hammered out 11 hits and played their first error-free game of the season against Poplar Bluff.

They made three errors, and Kennett also took advantage of five walks in the semifinal, played at Central.

"Errors and walks combined put runners on base, and they had a few hits when they needed them," Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett said.

Kennett had just four hits against starter Dylan Drury, who pitched 5 1/3 innings. Of the six runs he allowed, two were earned.

For Notre Dame (10-8), Abe Dirnberger hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. Jordan Buchheit and Mark Himmelberg each had two hits.

Himmelberg had a big game against Poplar Bluff, getting two hits and pitching a complete six innings to improve to 5-1. He allowed two hits and three walks while striking out eight.
