BENTON -- Kelly won its own four-team Hawk Invitational Saturday by slipping past Scott City 10-8 in eight innings in the finals.

Earlier, the Hawks downed East Carter County 9-5 while Scott City edged Jackson 8-7. Jackson came back to rout East Carter 18-3 in five innings for third place.

Kelly improved to 14-2 as the Hawks have now won eight straight games.

"It was ugly, but we'll take it," said Kelly coach Mike Scott. "Our defense was really bad. We allowed 13 runs and only two of them were earned."

Against East Carter, Jamie Essner pitched six innings for the win. All five runs he allowed were unearned. He gave up seven hits.

Bradley Kolwyck had two of Kelly's 10 hits.

In the finals, Kelly and Scott City were tied 6-6 after seven innings. The Hawks, the visiting team on the scoreboard, got four in the top of the eighth, the tie-breaking run scoring on Kolwyck's single. Justin Simpher added a two-run double. The Rams got two in the bottom of the eighth but fell short.

Essner and Simpher both had three of Kelly's 11 hits. Kolwyck and John Heuring added two apiece.
