BENTON -- The first annual Kelly Cross Country Invitational turned into a battle between two schools Saturday in the eight-team 5,000-meter event.
Kelly's varsity boys topped Marshall County, Ky., while the Kelly girls placed second behind the Kentucky runners.
The Hawks top five varsity boys all earned medals, with Michael Riley finishing in third place behind two Marshall County runners in a time of 17:07.10. Medals were awarded to the top 15 finishers in each division.
Ross McFerren, of Advance, placed fourth with a time of 17:51.80. Kelly placed four other runners in the sixth through ninth positions. Robert Macklen took 13th place for Notre Dame.
Kelly's Amy Arteme won the varsity girl's run in a time of 20:54, improving her personal-best time by over a minute.
"Amy's really worked hard this summer," said Kelly coach Bill Davis. "She carried our varsity girls."
Two other Lady Hawks -- Melissa Garner (10th) and Laura Ruff (11th) -- won medals. Jennifer Stoverink placed 13 for Notre Dame.
In the JV meets, Ben Klipfel and Daniel Mothershead led Kelly to victory and Kelly edged Notre Dame's girls for second place.
Klipfel and Mothershead finished 1-2 in the boy's run in times of 19:09.30 and 19.31 respectively. Notre Dame's Susan Judd won the girl's event in a time of 23:50.90.

Northwest Invitational
HOUSE SPRINGS -- Individuals from both the Cape Central and Jackson cross country teams took home medals Saturday from the 18- team Northwest Invitational.
Five members of the Lady Indians team earned medals in earning second place with 91 points De Soto (92 points). Central's girls placed fourth with 93 points. Lafayette won the girls event with 59 points.
Julie Wunderlich led the Lady Indians, placing fifth in a time of 18:48 on the 2.9 mile course. Other medal winners for the Lady Indians were Sarah Schlick (16th, 19.58), Jennifer Brown (19th, 20:21), Christy Thoma (25th, 20:35), and Sarah Stiegemeyer (26th, 20.41).
Central had two outstanding individual performances with a third place girl's finish for Tobie Bittle and a sixth-place boy's run from Rory Kipper.
Bittle covered the course in 18:42 to lead the Lady Tigers to a fourth-place finish. Other medal winners for the Lady Tigers were Kristine Tallent (10th, 19:43) and Leanne Lee (14th, 19:55).
Kipper completed the course in 16:09 to help place the Tigers in ninth. Jackson's boys placed 11th, led by Mark Sanders' time of 16:47, placing him 21st.
"There were a lot of teams there and they were quality teams so I thought we had a good showing," said Central coach Mark Hahn.
Other runners for the Tigers were: Jeff Haycraft, 41st; Matt Hawkins, 43rd; Mark Stone, 47th; and David Stahr, 49th.
Other runners for the Lady Tigers were: Myka Bohnsack, 31st and Lori Bittle, 35th.
Other runners for the Indians were: Steven Adams, 54th; Blake Popp, 57th; Ryan Walther, 69th; and Lance Schlick, 73rd.
Central's only home meet will be at Cape County Park Saturday morning.
* In the freshmen girls race, Central's Katie Hawkins won the 2.2 mile run with a time of 15:42. Teammate Amanda Hutteger took 14th place. Jackson's Jessica Craft (7th), Shannon Stover (9th) and Catlin Rourke (12th) helped Jackson earn fourth place.
For the freshmen boys, Central's Ross Tilghman (11th) and Justin Hawkins (14th) won medals. Robert Bauer of Jackson finished 13th.
* Medal winners (Top 20) for Jackson in the JV run were: Zach Frederick (7th) and Doug Cary (16th) leading the Indians to a seventh-place finish.
Sarah Strock (4th), Jodi Brunke (7th) and Amanda Lowes(18th) led the JV Lady Indians to fourth place.
