Kelley to play softball at Southeast

Katlyn Kelley, a senior at Notre Dame High School, was offered scholarships at several schools, but has decided to walk on and play softball at Southeast Missouri State University.

Kelley set four school records last year in Notre Dame's record-breaking 25-4 season.

She established new marks in hits (39), average (.429), on-base percentage (.475) and stolen bases (29).

Kelley, Notre Dame's leadoff hitter, was caught stealing just once the entire season.

Youth indoor soccer tourney this weekend

The Seventh Annual Saint Francis Medical Center Indoor Soccer Tournament for players ages 7 through 16, kicked off Friday night and games -- 172 of them in all -- will continue through the weekend.

One-hundred ten teams are participating from four states.

Forty-two teams are from Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Perryville, with the remaining squads traveling from St. Louis, Poplar Bluff, Kennett, Illinois, Kentucky and Mississippi.

Games will be held at the Show Me Center, Student Recreation Center and Houck Field House on the Southeast Missouri State University campus. Games will start today from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday's schedule begins at 7 a.m. with the final contests scheduled for 7 p.m.

Morris signs contract with Cardinals

ST. LOUIS -- It's official: 22-game winner Matt Morris has signed a three-year extension with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals announced the signing Friday, one day after a baseball official speaking on the condition he not be identified confirmed it. The 27-year-old right-hander negotiated his own $27 million contract.

Morris, 22-8 with a 3.16 ERA in 2001 in his first year as a starter since 1998, was eligible for salary arbitration and could have become a free agent after the 2002 season. He finished third in NL Cy Young Award balloting behind winner Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, both of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Gardenhire becomes Twins' manager

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins, uncertain if they'll even play this season, hired third-base coach Ron Gardenhire as manager on Friday.

The team decided not to wait any longer to fill the position, which opened when longtime manager Tom Kelly resigned in October. Baseball's plans for contraction remained tied up in court, and spring training is just six weeks away.

Gardenhire, 44, hit .232 in portions of five seasons with the New York Mets. He was a successful minor league manager for three seasons before joining the Twins' staff in 1991, the year the franchise won its second World Series title.

Toms, Perry share Mercedes lead

KAPALUA, Hawaii -- David Toms shot a 7-under 66 Friday for a share of the Mercedes Championship lead after two rounds.

Despite the strong Kona winds that knocked down Tiger Woods in a hurry, Toms had a bogey-free round on the Plantation Course at Kapalua and was at 11-under 135, tied with Kenny Perry (67).

Scott Verplank had a 69 and was another stroke back, while first-round leader Mike Weir had five bogeys to go along with four birdies in a round of 74.

Mark Calcavecchia hit a 3-iron to 2 feet on the 18th for his second eagle of the round, giving him a 66. He was at 138, along with '99 Mercedes winner David Duval (71).
