Jason Karnes appreciated the recent opportunity to meet a few of the men who built the golf course he now manages.

"The course wouldn't be here without these guys," said Karnes, who is in his first year as manager of the Cape Jaycees Municipal Golf Course, which marked the 50th anniversary of its opening on May 15.

Karnes, 23, graduated from Southeast Missouri State in December with a degree in sports management. The native of Bernie, Mo., had worked two years part time with the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department and had done an internship with the department, which operates the course.

He was hired in January to manage the facility.

"My main priority is to make this a comfortable and enjoyable place for golfers," Karnes said. "We want them to enjoy it from the moment they walk in the door."

Karnes played golf throughout his youth and was drawn to the opportunity to work in the game.

"I really enjoy the game, and I can't think of anyplace I'd rather be than a golf course every day," he said. "I thought this would be something I'd want to do long-term. The golf business changes with technology every year."

Karnes expects some changes coming at the course, including some work on the No. 1 tee box.
