Johnson leads Woodland to victory

Woodland freshman Neil Johnson made his first high school at-bat a memorable one.

Johnson drilled a three-run home run in his first at-bat, and finished with three hits and four RBIs as the Cardinals defeated Puxico 10-8 in baseball action Thursday.

Johnson also picked up the win on the mound in relief, striking out four and walking one in four scoreless innings.

Cole Benfield went 2-for-4 and scored four runs for the winners.

The game was played in Zalma because both teams' fields were unplayable.

Brett Slaten fired a 38 to earn meet medalist honors at Bent Creek Golf Course.

Emily Matthews shot a 43, while John Oliver (44) and Joe Wiggans (47) rounded out the scoring for Notre Dame.

On Wednesday, Notre Dame shot a 166 to defeat Perryville (231).

Slaten and Oliver both shot a 40 to share medalist honors.

Wiggans (43) and Austin Hunter (43) rounded out the Bulldogs' scoring.

Wes Buchheit led the Pirates with a 51. Rounding out the scoring for Perryville were Liam Price (58), Drew Palisch (63) and Matt Sippel (66).
