Jane Morrill, Notre Dame

The Notre Dame girls basketball team on Thursday and Friday avenged two losses from earlier this season to capture the championship of the Saint Francis Medical Center Holiday Classic at the Show Me Center.

That gave the No. 6 seed Bulldogs three upset wins to capture the title.

And a big reason was sophomore Jane Morrill.

Listed at 5 feet, 11 inches, Morrill dominated the inside and scored 56 points in the three victories for Notre Dame.

She saved her best for Friday night's 49-40 championship win against Farmington, scoring 19 points and blocking seven shots.

That followed a 12-point, four-block performance in the semifinals in a 52-34 upset of Jackson, and a 15-point effort in the opening win against Sparta (Ill.).

"I give her all the praise in the world," said Paige Schumer, Notre Dame's lone senior. "She works so hard."

Added coach Renee Peters: "With Jane [Morrill] back there [on defense], we know we can go out and pressure their guards a little bit because she's going to pick up any loose ends.

"For a sophomore, she's smart and very disciplined and she knows how to handle her body really well."
