James returns to Colts; Gonzalez's offer taken off table

Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James reported on time for the start training camp Sunday.

James, a two-time NFL rushing champ, is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The season-ending injury occurred late in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs in November, when James was tackled awkwardly. He has not participated in team workouts or practices since.

CHIEFS:General manager Carl Peterson said Sunday he is rescinding his long-term contract offer to Tony Gonzalez until the tight end gives up his dream of playing in the NFL and NBA.

"I always believed if you're going to make a commitment to one sport, you have to make it completely," Peterson said.

"And that means year-round and everything you're doing."

Gonzalez, who injured his ankle while playing for the Miami Heat's summer-league basketball team, turned down a long-term deal that included a signing bonus of about $8 million.

Peterson said he advised Gonzalez's agent that the only contract option is a one-year tender for a little more than $3 million, which labels Gonzalez the Chiefs' franchise player.

Gonzalez and first-round draft pick Ryan Sims are the Chiefs' only holdouts.

The Chiefs hope something can be worked out soon with Sims, the projected starter at defensive tackle.

PATRIOTS:A mysterious virus has kept right guard Joe Andruzzi from practice.

Andruzzi said he is frustrated with the infection that has wracked his body with pain since a few weeks after the Patriots' Super Bowl victory.

GIANTS:The team made no progress in contract talks with first-round pick Jeremy Shockey. The Miami tight end has missed the first four days of training camp.

JAGUARS:Defensive end Stalin Colinet tore cartilage in his left knee and is out indefinitely. Colinet twisted his knee during practice Saturday. He will undergo arthroscopic surgery, which has not yet been scheduled.

BROWNS:Rookie running back William Green reported to training camp Sunday, one day after ending his holdout and signing a five-year, $7.85 million contract.

BILLS: Buffalo activated tight end Jay Riemersma off the physically unable to perform list Sunday.
