Jackson sophomore Jill Rushin finished second in the shot put on the opening day of the Class 4 track and field championships Friday in Jefferson City, helping the Indians to third place in the team standings.

Rushin threw 43 feet, 11 3/4 inches, which was just over three feet short of the winning toss by Jasmine Boyer, a junior from Fort Zumwalt West.

Fellow sophomore Landon Wachter also had a strong day for the Indians, placing third in the girls 800 meters and qualifying second overall in the 400.

Wachter covered the 800 in 2 minutes, 16.82 seconds, which was 4 seconds off the winning time.

Running in the same 400 heat as top qualifier Racquell Powell (57.27) of Raytown South, Wachter finished second in 57.99. Central freshman Asia Thomas (58.86) ran in the same preliminary and placed third to qualify sixth overall.

The top eight finishers overall in Friday's two preliminary races qualified for today's finals.

In Class 3, Notre Dame's Matt Kiblinger placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 154-9.

The Notre Dame boys 1,600 relay squad of Ricky Harrington, Neil Kanneberg, Blake Kirkpatrick and Mark Zimmer qualified for today's final in 3:27.70. The Bulldogs finished fifth in their heat and eighth overall.

The Perryville boys qualified their 400 relay team. The quartet of Kris Cottner, Ryan Lorenz, Brandon Kennon and Josh Perreault was fifth overall in 43.2 seconds. Lincoln College Prep (42.9) had the top qualifying time in the event.
