Jackson's Goodman scores 21 in loss

POPLAR BLUFF — The B.A. Sports All-Star Extravaganza was an event made for a player like Spencer Goodman.

The 6-foot-5 Jackson senior, who recently committed to sign later this month with the North Dakota program that is moving to Division I next year, can shoot the 3-pointer, handle the ball in the open court and throw it down.

He did all of that Saturday afternoon and ended up as the high scorer for his team in the large schools boys basketball game at the Bess Activity Center on the campus of Three Rivers.

"We just tried to make it as much fun as possible," Goodman said.

He scored 21 points, knocking down three 3-pointers and throwing down a dunk on an alley-oop from Sikeston's Matt Ritch in the final minute.

But the Allen Christian team for which he played took an 89-71 beating from Lambert's Cafe in a game that was never close in the second half.

Notre Dame's Ryan Willen, a 6-8 forward headed to Division I Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, added 11 points for Allen Christian. But those were the only two players in double figures.

Game MVP Charles Wilson of Doniphan scored 25 and hit seven 3-pointers for the winners, who had four players in double figures, including dunk champion Tony Jones of East Prairie. He added 16 points.

Jajuan Bell of Central also was in double figures for Lambert's with 11, including three 3s, and gave up the ball with some nifty feeds.

"Both teams had good athletes," Goodman said, downplaying upset talk.

He said it was possibly his last local basketball competition "unless North Dakota plays somewhere around here."

"It's probably the best thing you can do before you leave," he added.

Girls game

Randy White, who recently announced his intention to step down as the Delta girls basketball coach, was among those guiding the New Wave Communications all-star team to a 67-60 victory against County Wide Insurance.

White also had the opportunity to coach one of his players, Sara Blattel, who scored 10 points — all in the first half — to help her team post the win.

"Sara played well," White said. "She plays hard on both ends of the floor all the time.

"The big thing is for the kids to at least have fun at an all-star game, and I think they did. It was a thrill for the players, and it was a thrill for the coaches."

White's team had three players in double figures, including game MVP Sara Woodgeard of Greenville. She scored 14.
