Jackson wins tennis district; doubles teams state-bound

Jackson's girls' tennis team qualified for sectionals with a first-place finish in Tuesday's Class 2, District 1 Tournament in St. Louis.

Jackson won with 26.5 points, one point ahead of Poplar Bluff. Central finished fourth among nine teams with 15.5 points.

Both Jackson and Poplar Bluff will compete in the four-team sectional meet in St. Louis on Oct. 19.

Individually, Jackson's No. 1 doubles team of Kim Anderson-Kelly Mitchell and the No. 2 doubles team of Katie Domian-Lauren Everett captured the top two places as they qualified for the state tournament Oct. 25-26 in Springfield, Mo.

In the championship match, Anderson and Mitchell defeated Domian and Everett 6-0, 6-2.

Kari Miinch was instrumental in Jackson's team win with two singles victories.

Softball

NOTRE DAME 5, ST. PIUS 2

In its last regular-season game before the district playoffs, Notre Dame (18-6) held off a late rally to defeat host St. Pius.

For the Bulldogs, Robyn Beel picked up the win. Beel struck out five, walked three and allowed one earned run.

Notre Dame got five hits from the Weissmueller sisters, three from Alana and two from Laura. Whitney Ostendorf chipped in two RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Delta 9, St. Vincent 3

Delta (5-12) will carry momentum into district play this week as the Bobcats pounded visiting St. Vincent in their regular-season finale.

The Bobcats used a five-run fifth inning to break the game wide open. Rebecca Cook picked up the win.

Bos' soccer

NOTRE DAME 5, SIKESTON 1

After having problems solving Sikeston's defensive shell in the first half, Notre Dame (8-4) busted out in the second half for five goals and went on to an easy home win.

The Bulldogs had several good chances in the first half, but entered halftime tied at zero. Blake Urhahn wasted no time in the second half though, scoring on a Johnathan Market assist in the first minute of the half.

Market had two of the Bulldogs' remaining goals while Tyler Cuba and Adam Prasanphanich added one each. Wade Cramer, Prasanphanich, Cuba and Josh Essner added assists.

Notre Dame's JV (6-0-3) continued its unbeaten streak with a 4-0 win.

Volleyball

LEOPOLD 15-15, ZALMA 3-3

Leopold (21-2-1) kept rolling with a win at Zalma.

Holly Jansen led the way for Leopold with seven kills and four blocks. Courtney Wesbecher chipped in six kills and Wendy Vandeven had another strong match with 27 assists.

Meadow Heights 15-15, Marquand 0-0

Meadow Heights used a strong team effort to cruise by visiting Marquand.

Meadow Heights had nine service aces, 12 kills and 10 assists.

Festus 15-15, Perryville 5-1

Perryville (6-16-3) could not overcome several key injuries and lost in two games at home.

Perryville lost both of its starting outside hitters, one to a car accident over the weekend and one to an ankle injury early in the match.

Windsor 15-15, St. Vincent 11-8

St. Vincent (9-13-2) fell to 3-3 in Jefferson County Conference play with a tough two-game loss on the road.

MaryBeth Reiss led the offense for St. Vincent with four kills and four blocks. Sierra Paulus chipped in four kills and three blocks. Dani Emmendorfer added 11 assists.

Eagle Ridge 16-15, New Salem Baptist 14-5

New Salem Baptist (6-7) dropped below .500 with a two-game loss to Eagle Ridge at home.

Holly Jordan led the way for New Salem with nine kills and five service points.

CENTRAL 42, FARMINGTON 6

Martez Bell and Marcus Rice each scored two touchdowns as Central's JV rolled to victory Monday.

Bell scored on runs of 80 and 42 yards. Rice scored on a fumble recovery and on a 3-yard run. Tyrone Reece added a 23-yard touchdown run for Central (1-2) and Phil Brooks had a 30-yard scoring scamper.
