JACKSON -- The Jackson High volleyball team recovered from a 14-0 Woodland run in the second game of Thursday night's match to defeat the Lady Cardinals in three sets 16-14, 10-15, 15-10. Jackson (13-1-1) squeaked out the first game and quickly jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the second game. Woodland then rebelled against Jackson's sweep plans with 14 straight points to force the deciding game...

JACKSON -- The Jackson High volleyball team recovered from a 14-0 Woodland run in the second game of Thursday night's match to defeat the Lady Cardinals in three sets 16-14, 10-15, 15-10.

Jackson (13-1-1) squeaked out the first game and quickly jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the second game. Woodland then rebelled against Jackson's sweep plans with 14 straight points to force the deciding game.

"We kind of fell apart that second game, but the girls bounced back," said Jackson coach Nancy Ellis. "Woodland is a good team."

Andrea Koeper led Jackson with 18 kills and seven blocks. Jennifer Mesey added seven kills while Marci Myracle had five blocks. Sarah Biri finished with three aces and Casey Randol accumulated 10 assists.

Jackson won the JV match 15-6, 16-14 and split the freshman contest 15-3, 6-15.

Notre Dame 17-8-15

Oran 15-15-5

ORAN -- In a hard-fought match, Notre Dame prevailed by dominating the third game.

Lynne Obermiller paced the Lady Bulldogs (5-6-1) with 15 kills and 17 service points. Michelle Hency had seven kills and 19 assists, Carrie Halter contributed seven kills and 14 service points, and Katie Canfield added 17 assists.

"Oran really played us tough," said Notre Dame coach Helen Payne. "We really looked good in the third game."

Notre Dame won the JV match 15-10, 15-7.

Leopold 15-15

Advance 4-10

LEOPOLD -- Leopold improved to 6-3 with a two-game victory.

Megan Keith led the way in kills with seven and Emily Broshuis added six. Laura Jansen had four kills and eight assists while Kelly Wesbecher contributed nine assists.

Leopold also won the JV match 15-2, 15-7.

Bell City 12-15-15

Richland 15-2-5

BELL CITY -- Bell City rebounded from a first-game loss to prevail.

The Lady Cubs (4-6-2) got a big match from Jessica Shelby, who had 12 service points, 11 kills and seven digs. Katie Spears had eight kills, Kelli Steiner dished out 15 assists and Sarah Pobst added seven digs.

Bell City's JV lost 15-12, 15-11.

Perryville 15-15

Grandview 8-8

PERRYVILLE -- Perryville defeated Grandview in convincing fashion.

Crystal Thieret led the scoring with 10 service points.

De Soto 15-15

St. Vincent 2-3

DE SOTO -- The Squaws fell to 4-6 as De Soto romped.

Jessica Lakenan had eight kills and eight blocks for St. Vincent while Casey Kirn had nine assists.

St. Vincent lost the JV match in three games.

Chaffee 16-15

Oak Ridge 14-10

CHAFFEE -- Jill Little had 11 kills as Chaffee swept Oak Ridge aside.

Amy Burnett dished out 16 assists in the victory. Chaffee improved to 3-12.

Oak Ridge won the JV contest 15-11, 15-3.

BOYS SOCCER

Notre Dame 8, Farmington 0

Five players scored goals as the Bulldogs romped to improve their record to 7-1.

Scott Wittenborn, Adam Obermiller and Chris Dirnberger all had two goals for the Bulldogs while Nick Kapfer and Bryan Glosemeyer added one each.

Oliver Sanders led the way in assists with three. He was followed by Tim Wencewicz with two and Glosemeyer and Wes Steele with one apiece.

Goalkeeper Michael Gosche recorded the shutout.

"Farmington is still in their infancy with their soccer program and it's hard when you're in your first few years to play more experienced programs," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn. "A game like this gives us a chance to use a lot of players."

Notre Dame won the JV game 4-0 behind two goals from Tyler Cuba. Travis Siebert and Adam Prasanphanich each scored one goal. Adam Ralls had the shutout.

Poplar Bluff 3, Cape Central 1

POPLAR BLUFF -- Chris Cole scored Central's lone goal as the Tigers fell to 5-5.

Central's JV suffered a 4-3 loss, getting goals from Clint Hoffman, Paul Miller and Chris Limbaugh.

Marion 2, Jackson 0

JACKSON -- Jackson suffered a shutout loss to the Illinois squad as the Indians fell to 3-5-2.

Jackson won the JV contest 2-1. Trent Forester and Bahlraj Dirnberger each scored a goal.

SOFTBALL

Jackson 2, Notre Dame 1

JACKSON -- Jackson squeezed out a victory over Notre Dame in a contest that featured two strong pitching performances.

The Lady Indians are 11-6 while the Lady Bulldogs fell to 7-7.

Winner Beth Becker allowed four hits while striking out six and walking none. The only run she allowed was unearned.

Loser Ramona Blankenship also gave up just four hits. She fanned one and walked one.

Jackson scored a run in each of the first two innings, both coming home on squeeze plays. Notre Dame got its lone run in the seventh.

"It was a well-played, well-pitched game," said Jackson coach Becky Riney.

Jackson's JV prevailed 13-4. Heather Tuschoff was the winning pitcher.

Perryville 16

Herculaneum 5

HERCULANEUM -- Perryville banged out 17 hits to support the pitching of Megan Narrow.

Narrow allowed six hits and five runs. She fanned three and walked one.

Amanda Nuyt led Perryville with four hits and two runs batted in. Brittany Weibrecht had three hits while Rachel Verseman, Stacey Baer and Amanda Schumer all had two hits. Schumer finished with four RBIs and Baer belted a home run.

GIRLS TENNIS

Cape Central 8, Charleston 1

CHARLESTON -- The Lady Tigers remained undefeated in dual matches at 6-0.

Central also won the JV contest 12-4.

Central 8th grade rolls

Mitch Craft scored four touchdowns and ran for over 200 yards as Cape Central's eighth-graders opened their season with a 27-8 win over Farmington.

Ty Schuessler had three extra points and an interception. Wil Johnson added an interception.
