SIKESTON -- A more heartbreaking loss would be hard to come by.

Jackson High's baseball team led by as much as 12-3 before Farmington scored seven runs in the seventh inning and beat the Indians 13-12 Monday in the Class 4A, District 1 tournament.

"There wasn't much we could do," said Jackson coach Sam Sides. "(Farmington) just battled back. You have to give them credit."

Eight runs on nine hits in the top of the fifth inning gave fourth-seeded Jackson a 12-3 lead.

But No. 5 Farmington scored 10 times in the last three innings while Jackson, which finished the season with a record of 8-14, was held scoreless in its sixth and seventh. The Knights scored the seven runs in the last frame on five hits, one hit batter and three walks.

Chris Schlick went six innings. Tired by the seventh, he allowed the first four Farmington batters to get on. Paul Johns went 1-3 of an inning and Chris Kohm was pitching when the Knights won it with a double.

Jackson had 15 hits to Farmington's nine. Justin Gladish and Todd Wessel each went 3-for-4 and Kohm and Bert Hahs each were 2-for-4. Hahs homered in the second inning.

"We outhit them, but they didn't walk anybody," Sides said.

Class 1A, District 2

ORAN -- Oran will meet Ste. Genevieve Valle at 2:30 and Oak Ridge will face Advance at 4:30 today in semifinal games.

On Monday, Oran blasted Scott County Central 17-0, Oak Ridge nipped Bell City 8-7, Advance beat Leopold 9-5 and Valle topped Delta 7-3.

Oran scored 15 runs in the bottom of the first inning in its game. The Eagles had eight hits in the five-inning game. Jeff Schaefer went 2-for-3.

In the second game, Bell City led 3-0 before Oak Ridge (8-9) scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning. Bell City answered with four in their part of the last inning, but stranded the bases loaded trailing by one.

In Advance's victory, Adam Rainey was 2-for-4 and Chris Wallace went 2-for-3 with a home run.

Class 3A, District 3

STE. GENEVIEVE -- Fourth-seed Perryville had its season ended by fifth-seed Festus 12-4 on Monday. No other details were availible.

GOLF

Notre Dame 13th at state

COLUMBIA -- Eighteen holes into the 36-hole Class 2A state tournament Monday at A.L. Gustin Jr. Golf Course, Notre Dame's 340 places it 13th in the 18-team field.

In the Class 1A tournament at Lake of the Woods Golf Course, St. Vincent shot a 341, putting it in third place midway through the competition.

In the Class 4A tournament at Sedalia Country Club in Sedalia, Cape Central's Dane McLaird shot an 83 and is tied for 76th, and Central's Dan Groesbeck shot an 89 and is tied for 106th.

Jackson's Gabe Estes shot an 85 and is tied for 88th.

Pembroke Hill's 304 leads the 2A tournament. For Notre Dame, Jonathan LeGrand shot an 81, tying him for 42nd. John Brey shot 83, Matt Howard 85, Chris Koeper 91 and Cliff Seratti 96.

Tipton's 335 leads St. Vincent by six strokes. Craig Schumer's 83 ties him for 13th. Jon Paulus shot 84, Ryan Prost 85, Joe Ponder 89 and Matt Hoch 89.
