Jackson High School's girls tennis team pushed its dual-match record to 3-0 while dropping Cape Girardeau Central to 0-2 as the visiting Lady Indians prevailed 7-2 over their major rivals Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Indians' top four singles players -- Nicole Poythress, Katie Domian, Kelly Mitchell and Carly Vogelsang -- all won handily by dropping just one game apiece. Jackson swept the three doubles matches.

"Jackson's top four players are really good and overall they've got a solid team," said Central coach Bud Craven.

Central's JV remained unbeaten at 2-0 with a 16-0 victory.

Murphysboro Invitational

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- Notre Dame began its season with solid performances in the Murphysboro Invitational.

The boys placed fifth out of 11 teams while the girls were sixth out of 10 teams.

"We kind of got our feet wet," said Notre Dame coach Bill Davis. "It was a tough meet, but I thought we did OK."

David Unterreiner was Notre Dame's top finisher in the 3.1-mile boys race, placing 15th in 19:14. Other Bulldogs finishes: 25. Allen Frey (19:53); 26. Marcus LeGrand (19:55); 32. Austin Critchlow (20:47); 45. Brian Steele (22:00); 49. Ryan Roggow (22:19); 51. Mark Unterreiner (22:24).

For the girls, who ran 2.17 miles, Notre Dame's Sarah Unterreiner was 16th in 17:19. Other Lady Bulldog finishes: 21. Kasie Essner (17:46); 26. Megan Rosenquist (18:07); 39. Toni Horrell (19:28); 45. Emily Ivers (20:01).

There were also JV races. Notre Dame's top finishers were Brittney Little (17th, 19:25) for the girls and Justin Moore (32nd, 22:58) for the boys.

VOLLEYBALL

Jackson 15-15

St. Pius 13-8

FESTUS, Mo. -- Jackson improved to 2-0 by beating St. Pius in straight games.

Erin Hartman had 11 assists and five kills for the Lady Indians, who got seven assists, six kills and six digs from Jessie Koeper. Linden Hahs added five digs.

Jackson's JV is also 2-0 after a 15-4, 15-11 victory. Jackson's freshmen lost its season opener 15-2, 15-5.

Scott City 15-15

New Madrid 13-7

SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Scott City evened its record at 1-1 with a straight-set victory.

Shana Wadlington led the way in kills with seven and she also added eight digs. Amanda O'Brien had six kills, followed by Makenzie Cartwright with five and Mindy Miller with four. Sidney Baer had a team-high 11 digs.

Scott City won the JV match 15-11, 9-15, 15-2.
