JACKSON HOLDS OFF FARMINGTON 8-5

JACKSON -- Jackson built a 6-0 lead in the first two innings and held off Farmington 8-5 in a makeup game played Saturday.

Jackson, which had dropped games earlier in the week to Cape Central and Dexter, improved to 8-13 on the season.

"It was a big game for us because we've been struggling," said Jackson coach Sam Sides.

Josh Hopkins picked up the win and received relief help from Toby Freeman. Hopkins allowed six hits in 4 2-3 innings, walking six and striking out four. Freeman pitched scoreless relief, striking out three and allowing three hits in 1 1-3 innings.

Tory Meyr led Jackson's 12-hit attack with a 4-for-5 performance. Todd Metheny added a pair of hits.

Jackson scored one run in the first and five in the second for a 6-0 lead. Farmington cut the deficit to 6-5 with three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. Jackson added two insurance runs in the sixth.

Chaffee wins tourney

CHAFFEE -- The Lady Red Devils claimed their own Chaffee Tournament with a 17-4, five-inning victory over Advance in Saturday's championship game.

Amy Burnett (4-1) went the distance for Chaffee, allowing eight hits, walking three and striking out four.

She also helped herself at the plate with three hits and four RBIs. Jamie Duncan added two hits and three RBIs and Jennifer Siebert also had a pair of hits.

Chaffee trailed 3-1 after two innings but overtook the Lady Hornets in a nine-run third. Chaffee (14-3) added six runs in the fourth four a 16-3 lead.

Chaffee squeaked past Delta 8-7 in the semifinals. Jodie Pfefferkorn tripled with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Lady Red Devils to victory. Pfefferkorn finished with three hits and two RBIs. Siebert added four hits as Chaffee had 12 overall.

Duncan (9-2) picked up the win. She struck out 11, walked one and allowed 12 hits.
