DEXTER -- Jackson built up a big lead and then held off a late Dexter rally as the Indians picked up a 9-6 victory Monday in high school baseball action.
The Indians, who raised their record to 10-6, received an impressive pitching performance from John Jackson, who was making his first varsity start.
Jackson allowed just three hits and two runs both of them unearned in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked four.
"John really pitched a good game," said Jackson coach Sam Sides. "For his first varsity start, he did a great job."
Lance Limbaugh allowed four hits and four runs in one inning while Lucas McCulley retired the final two batters in the seventh to earn a save after Dexter had rallied with four runs.
Jackson had eight hits. McCulley homered, doubled and drove in two runs while Limbaugh and Toby Freeman both had two hits and two RBIs.
The Indians jumped on top with four runs in the opening inning and they got two more in the second. Jackson eventually built a 9-2 lead before Dexter's seventh-inning rally fell short.
Jackson returns to action Wednesday at Cape Central.
Kelly 11, Oran 10
ORAN -- In a thrilling, back-and-forth game, Kelly scored a run in the top of the eighth to slip past Oran.
The Hawks improved to 9-7 while the Eagles fell to 8-9.
"It was really a wild, exciting game," said Kelly coach Mike Scott.
Kelly led 4-2 early only to fall behind 7-4 after four innings. The Hawks rallied for a 9-7 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles surged back on top 10-9 heading into the seventh and final regulation inning.
Jess Pattengill's leadoff home run in the top of the seventh pulled Oran into a 10-10 tie. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Oran loaded the bases with one out and had two of the area's top hitters up. But Kelly reliever Barry Ziegler fanned Philip Seyer and then got Garrett Cook to tap back to the mound to force extra innings.
Kelly scored the go-ahead run in the eighth as Brad Kolwyck singled, stole second and came home on Tyler Schlosser's single. Ziegler then retired Oran in order in the bottom of the eighth to end things.
Ziegler, a sophomore who had pitched just two innings previously this season, got the win by hurling three hitless innings, although Oran did touch him for three unearned runs.
"That was really some clutch pitching in a tight situation by Ziegler in the seventh," Scott said. "He did a great job. We knew he had the potential and he's definitely earned himself some more time (on the mound)."
Kelly starter Jamie Essner allowed seven runs and nine hits in five innings.
Oran's Adam Friga hurled all eight innings and took the loss.
Kelly finished with 15 hits, led by Kolwyck with three. Pattengill, Schlosser, Ziegler, Justin Simpher and John Heuring all added two, with Simpher getting the Hawks' other home run.
Oran's nine-hit attack was paced by Adam Friga, Travis Friga and Ryne Wood with two each. Seyer and Cook both homered.

ADVANCE -- The Cardinals scored six two-out runs in the second inning as they avenged an earlier loss to the Hornets.
Danny Lincoln, who finished with five RBIs, opened the floodgate with a two-run double to account for the game's first runs. Woodland (12-4) had three of its six hits in the inning. Lincoln later added a bases-loaded triple in a four-run sixth. Advance scored single runs in the first, fourth and seventh innings.
Paul Long (3-1) went the distance for Woodland, allowing seven hits, striking out nine and walking six.
Garrett Broshuis, who shut out the Cardinals earlier this season, suffered the loss. He struck out seven, walked three and allowed six hits.
