POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Jackson dominated the distance races, swept the throwing events and got a record-breaking performance in reclaiming the SEMO North Conference girls title Friday.
Chelsea Drum, Lauryn Varner and Nicole Humphreys each won two individual events while Carli Knott added another and Katie Schumer broke a stadium record in the pole vault to lead the Indians to a 32-point victory.
"It was a total team effort," Jackson coach Jimmy Stoverink said. "Everybody did their job today."
The Indians came up 16 points shy of sweeping, as host Poplar Bluff defended its boys title.
The Mules won seven events to Jackson's five. Denzell Britton won two individual races and helped two relays win, and freshman Isaiah Johnson swept the hurdles while Isaiah Williams and Makarius Bell earned wins.
"There were some big things," Mules coach Mark Barousse said. "Any time you're in a conference meet like that it's a point here or there."
While the Mules dominated the sprints, Jackson racked up points in the distance events.
Caleb Bess won the mile, and Joseph Reed took the 2-mile while teaming up with Gabriel Dudley and Alex Philipps to win the 3,200-meter relay by nearly four minutes. Bess and Reed were followed across the finish line by teammates.
"I'm being a little biased because I coach the distance runners, but our distance runners really came through," Stoverink said. "... Got a lot of points there."
Jackson runners were the first two across the line in any race longer than a half mile on the girls side. Drum won the mile and 2-mile races while Knott took the 800 meters by 8 seconds. The pair teamed up with Megan Barnum and Anastasia Compton to win the 3,200 relay.
Drum and Knott were 0.02 of a second from winning all four of their events, as Poplar Bluff held off Jackson in the final event, the 1,600 relay.
It didn't matter, as the Indians won with 108 points to Poplar Bluff's 76.
Drum defended her title in the mile, winning in 5 minutes, 32.07 seconds. She ran the 3,200 in 12:27 followed a second later by Compton.
Drum ran a total of 3.75 miles.
"A lot of girls (like) that did a lot of work today," Stoverink said.
Humphreys won the discus with a throw of 115-feet, 9-inches and took the shot at 39-9.
Schumer cleared 11-feet in the pole vault, 4 inches higher than the stadium record set in 2000. The 80-year-old facility features a long jump record by Olympian Jackie Joyner.
Varner won the high jump by clearing 5-10 and won the 300 hurdles in 50.58 by beating teammate Kennedy Bauer by 0.02 of a second.
Sikeston's Antravia Green won the 100 in 12.61 and was second in the 200 by 0.03 of a second behind Poplar Bluff's Krisman Eakin, who also won the 400 by just under a second from Jackson's Kaylee Wilson.
Sikeston's Sarah Martin won the 100 hurdles in 17.85 as the Bulldogs finished third.
Central won the 400 relay with Brittnee Blackmon, Jaleria Dent, Kylie Lane and Alexus Walker finishing in 50.27.
Central's Rico Flye won the boys high jump at 6-0.
Britton won the 100 by 0.39 of a second in 11.05 and took the 200 in 22.6, again beating teammate Jerrid Moore.
Jackson's Dakota Maddox won the pole vault by clearing 15-0 while Dane Evans won the shot with a throw of 48-10. Reed ran 10:29 to win the 3,200 while Bess won the 1,600 in 4:45.
Earnest Fobbs of Sikeston won both the long and triple jump, and the Bulldogs won the 1,600 relay while Poplar Bluff beat Jackson to the line, having already clinched the title.
