Jackson falls at Rockwood Summit

The Jackson football team fell behind 23-0 in the first quarter, as host Rockwood Summit began Class 5 District 1 play with a 30-6 victory Friday night.

The Indians, who had a four-game winning snapped, fell to 5-3, while the Falcons improved to 4-4.

Summit received the opening kickoff and marched 60 yards for a touchdown. The drive was capped by quarterback John Burton's 3-yard run for a 7-0 lead.

Jackson's first offensive possession ended when quarterback Rex Meyr was intercepted on the third play. Eddie Calvin ran it back for a touchdown and a 14-0 advantage less than 6 minutes into the contest.

The Indians were forced to punt on their second possession. The Falcons again put together a solid drive, leading to Barry Mathes' field goal for a 17-0 lead.

Jackson fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Summit recovered deep in Indians' territory. With under a minute to play in the opening period, Burton hit Austin Hulett for an 18-yard touchdown pass, boosting the Falcons lead to 23-0.

The Indians, who held Summit scoreless in the second quarter, took advantage of a short punt and had the ball near the Falcons' 30-yard line late in the period. But Jackson failed to gain a first down.

Jackson's Jordan Sneathen intercepted a pass with under 1 minute remaining to help snuff out a Summit drive, as the Falcons led 23-0 at halftime.

The Indians, who had only 34 total yards in the first half, took the second-half kickoff and marched inside Summit's 35-yard line before stalling.

Summit made it 30-0 late in the third quarter when Burton hit Calvin on an 18-yard touchdown pass.

Jackson finally got on the board early in the fourth quarter when Meyr hit Luke Crader with a 29-yard touchdown pass.

The Indians play their second of three district games next Friday night, hosting pre-district favorite Eureka.

NMCC 34, Perryville 14

The Pirates remained winless by dropping its Class 3 District 1 opener to visiting New Madrid County Central.

Perryville (0-8) trailed 20-7 at halftime and never got closer.

Joey Kreitler rushed for 97 yards on 16 carries, scoring on a 35-yard run. Perryville's other touchdown was by quarterback Ryan Schilling on a 5-yard run.

Scott City 20, Grandview 19

Scott City used a reverse on a kickoff to set up a late touchdown for its third win of the season.

The Rams (3-5) intercepted a Grandview pass with less than a minute to play to preserve the win in Class 2 District 2.

Scott City plays next week at Crystal City, which beat Charleston on Friday night.
