All high school events were reported to the Southeast Missourian on Saturday.

The Jackson cross country team placed first in both the boys' and girls' categories in the Juniors Division at Saturday's Jackson Invitational at Jackson City Park.

Junior Chelsea Drum posted a first-place time of 14 minutes, 10 seconds to lead the Indians, while teammate Carli Knott finished 47 seconds behind Drum for second place. On the boys' side, Jackson Givens finished third (13:05), Caleb Bess followed in fourth (13:18) and Alex Phillips took fifth (13:33) for the Indians.

Jackson's Jack Jeffers won the senior boys' race with a time of 12 minutes, 13 seconds and Ean Buffington won the freshmen boys' race with a 10:26 to lead the Indians to third place overall in the team standings in both age divisions.

Kirkwood won the senior and freshmen races on the boys' side as well as the senior and sophomore divisions in the girls' category. Farmington won the boys' sophomore and girls' freshmen races.

GIRLS GOLF

ND places third

Sarah Bell carded a 2-over-par 73 to lead the Bulldogs as Notre Dame placed third in the eight-team Lady Patriots Invitational at the Massac County Country Club in Metropolis, Illinois.

Bell also received the medalist honors after a two-hole sudden death was forced when Eldorado's Ashton Goodley tied with a 73. Bell birdied the second hole and Goodley parred to allow the Notre Dame freshman to come away with the medal.

The Bulldogs tied Eldorado, Illinois, for third place in the team standings but beat out the Eagles with their fifth scorer.

Hannibal Invitational

Saxony Lutheran's Dustin Lorenz and Ryan Palmer scored two goals apiece as the sixth-seeded Crusaders knocked off Lanphier (Springfield, Illinois) 4-2 for seventh place in the Hannibal Invitational.

Goalkeeper Jacob Stueve had 10 saves for Saxony Lutheran (2-4-1).

The Crusaders advanced to the seventh-place game after falling to Macomb, Illinois, 3-2 in penalty kicks in the consolation semifinal. Saxony led 3-1 at halftime but saw Macomb force overtime with a goal with one second left in regulation. Jacob Wunderlich, Drew Zieba and Luke LeGrand each had a goal for the Crusaders in the loss.

Saxony started the tournament with a 4-1 loss to host and third-seeded Hannibal on Friday. Dakota Walther scored the lone goal for the Crusaders.

VOLLEYBALL

VolleyballFest

A new champion was crowned Saturday at the eight-team Notre Dame VolleyballFest as the St. Pius X Lancers of Festus, Missouri, downed Dexter 25-23, 25-20 for the title.

The Lancers, who have made four consecutive appearances at the Class 2 state tournament, dethroned defending tournament champion Perryville and dealt the Pirates (6-1) their first loss of the season in a 27-25, 13-25, 25-15 Gold Bracket semifinal.

Dexter (6-2-1) advanced to the Gold Bracket championship with a 25-21, 25-20 sweep of host Notre Dame (3-3-1). The Bearcats and Lancers split a 27-26, 26-27 match during Friday's pool play. Dexter drew the top seed by edging St. Pius X by three points overall in the pool.

The Lancers improved to 14-0-1 with Saturday's tournament championship. The Lancers also won the Windsor Invitational on Aug. 23, defeating the host Owls 25-21, 25-16 for the title.

Ste. Genevieve defeated St. Vincent for the Silver Bracket championship. The Dragons (6-3) topped Jackson 25-22, 25-13 in the semifinal to advance.

Jackson went 1-7 in the tournament. Kayla Thurman notched 29 digs, five aces and four kills while Autumn Reid tallied 18 kills, eight digs and six aces for Jackson (1-5-1). Hannah Hunt added 17 kills and Jenna Little had 10 kills while Maci McCuan dished out 21 assists and McKinzie Scott totaled 20 assists for the Indians.

Dexter defeated Ste. Genevieve 25-13, 24-26, 25-23 for the junior varsity tournament championship.

SOFTBALL

Kelly prevailed 1-0 in eight innings over Portageville in the Notre Dame SoftballFest.

Alexis Dock was the winning pitcher for the Hawks.

Portageville's Jill Kellams belted a home run as the Bulldogs picked up a vengeful win and dealt host Notre Dame its first loss of the season in one of Saturday's championship semifinals of the Notre Dame SoftballFest.

Standout pitcher Taylor Tiffany got the win in the circle. She went the distance and gave up two earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Pitcher Nikki Peters suffered her first loss. She threw a complete game and gave up two earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Payton Friga tripled to pace Notre Dame.

The loss sent Notre Dame to the third-place game where the Bulldogs rebounded and defeated De Soto 7-6. Maddie Urhahn led Notre Dame with two home runs and Payton Friga added another triple.

Haylie Santos notched her first win in the circle. She went the distance and recorded three strikeouts and one walk for Notre Dame, which improved to 6-1 with the victory.

De Soto's Bethany Canada also hit a home run and doubled to pace the Dragons (6-2).

Wiley Lowry took the loss in the circle. She pitched a complete game and had one strikeout and one walk.

Marquette Relay

The Central swim team took third in the 300 breaststroke relay and fourth in three other events for a combined score of 106 to tie Parkway South for eighth place at the 12-team Marquette Relays in the suburban St. Louis area.

On Friday, Central finished second in a three-team meet. MICDS won with 129, followed by Central (93) and Notre Dame (86).

Ladue Horton Watkins Invitational

Jackson's Joey Janisse posted a first-place time of 56.85 seconds to win the 100 individual medley as the Indians finished fourth overall out of 16 teams in the Ladue Horton Watkins Invitational on Saturday in the suburban St. Louis area.

Janisse also finished third in the 100 backstroke with a state-qualifying time of 56.67 seconds. Austin Hobbs also had a state cut in the 100 breaststroke with a third-place time of 1 minute, 4.32 seconds.
