METROPOLIS, Ill. -- Jackson's boys rallied from a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime, but saw Evansville Memorial (Ind.) emerge with a 72-65 high school basketball victory Saturday in the Super Seven Shootout.
Clint Keown was the main nemesis for Jackson as the 6-foot-3 senior guard netted a game-high 31 points.
"Keown is getting consideration for Mr. Indiana," said Jackson coach Steve Burk. "He averaged 27 points last year and he got 31 today. He's a really good player."
Jackson countered with 25 points by Justin Keen, who hit three 3-pointers. Jeff Walter, the only other Indian in double figures, added 19 points.
Jackson's only lead in the game came at 2-0. Evansville, which led by as many as 13 points in the first half, led 33-23 at halftime. The Indians trimmed the deficit to 45-43 by the start of the fourth quarter before slipping behind by nine with six minutes left.
However, Jackson rallied to tie the game at 57-57 as Walter scored on a conventional three-point play with 10 seconds remaining.
Evansville held a 15-8 scoring advantage in overtime.
Scott City Tournament
SCOTT CITY -- The Scott City Rams claimed their own round-robin basketball tournament Saturday with a 77-48 win over winless St. Vincent.
The Indians actually led 8-4 early, but a 30-0 run by the Rams put the game away by the second quarter. Scott City led 43-18 at halftime as St. Vincent fell to 0-4. Scott City won the tourney with a 3-0 mark to start the season.
Ryan Weatherspoon led the Rams with 19 points. Jon Beck added 13 and Blaine Bruce 10. St. Vincent got 13 points from Kyle Eggers and Josh Wheeler scored 11 with three 3-pointers. The Indians committed 31 turnovers.
Scott City hosts Egyptian (Ill.) Tuesday. St. Vincent gets a much-needed week off before hosting Ste. Genevieve Dec. 15.
Dongola (Ill.) 74, Chaffee 58
DONGOLA, Ill. -- Chaffee dropped to 0-2 Saturday with a loss across the river.
The Red Devils fell behind 20-2 after the opening quarter and never got back into the game. Chaffee trailed 33-13 at halftime.
Jeremy Vandeven led Chaffee with 17 points. Andy Proffer scored 14, including three 3-pointers, and Phillip Blevins 12 in the loss.
Chaffee hosts East Prairie on Tuesday.
WRESTLING
Fox Tournament
ARNOLD -- Fox won its own eight-team invitational Saturday, but Jackson and Cape Central got some quality wrestling performances from its athletes.
Fox won the event with 203 points followed by Jackson (153), Wentzville (126), Hazelwood East (100 1/2) and Cape Central (92 1/2). Sikeston placed eighth with 47 points.
"I thought, for our youth, we did pretty good," said Jackson coach Steve Wachter. "I wish we would have had more than one champion, but overall I'm really pleased with our performances."
Lance Schlick was the only Jackson individual to win his weight class, claiming the 125-pound class. Other top performances by the Indians came from: 103 - Chris Brown, 4th; 112 - Brett Stroud, 3rd: 119 - Eric Rhodes, 2nd; 130 - Adam Wachter, 2nd; 135 - Kyle Huck 4th; 152 - Mark Wade, 2nd; 160 - Hance Bartles, 4th; 171 - Lance McClard, 4th; 215 - Kent Langston, 2nd; Heavyweight - Aaron Ross 4th.
For Cape Central: 112 - Keith Benton, 2nd; 119 - Eric Henry, 4th; 125 - Ben Allen, 2nd; 135 - Travis Caufman, 2nd, 189 - Matt Strickland, 3rd; Heavyweight - Craig Knoth, 2nd.
Sikeston got an individual title from Doug Wiles at 171 pounds and Aaron Bouldry placed fourth at 189 pounds.
