Juli Inkster shot a 6-under 66 to take a three-shot lead in the opening round of the Women's British Open on Thursday.

Inkster, who at 46 seeks to become the oldest woman to win a major, had a bogey on the final hole after her drive hit a fairway bunker.

Maria Horth and Silvia Cavalleri are tied for second with 69s. Annika Sorenstam finished double-bogey, bogey to go from 3-under to even-par 72 and 16-year-old Michelle Wie bogeyed the opening three holes, finishing at 74.

Inkster, who has a daughter the same age as Wie, won her first two majors 22 years ago. Her most recent was the U.S. Women's Open in 2002. If she collects her first British Open title Sunday at Royal Lytham in Lytham St. Annes, England, it will mark her eighth major.

"I played very well all day. It's a tough golf course. If someone had offered me a 66, I would have gone to the bar and watched," Inkster said. "I'm very happy with the way I played. I did a lot of good things out there."

Dalhousie touring pro Karen Stupples, the 2004 Women's British Open champion, opened with a 1-over 73.

Buick Open

Mike Weir matched his best round of the season with a 9-under 63 on Thursday to take the lead in the suspended Buick Open, one shot ahead of two-time defending champion Vijay Singh and three in front of Tiger Woods.

Joe Durant, Brett Quigley and Woody Austin were two shots back at 65.

All of the leaders were fortunate to have morning tee times.

The tournament was delayed 2 hours, 16 minutes in the morning because of stormy weather. A second delay lasted 1 hour, 36 minutes in the afternoon before play was suspended for the day because of unplayable conditions.

A little more than half of the field was unable to complete the first round and those unlucky golfers will be back on the course early Friday, before the second round begins, with some needing to play 36 holes before the cut is made.

Woods, coming off his British Open win, got off to a strong start with five straight birdies and six on his first 10 holes. After getting to 7 under on his 16th hole, he gave a stroke back after a poor bunker shot and finished at 6-under 66.

Singh is trying to become the first player to win three straight Buick Opens and four overall.
