~ Defending Class 1 state champion St. Vincent posted its fifth straight victory with a 42-8 decision in the district opener
St. Vincent turned two interceptions into touchdowns, and Waylon Richardet scored two TDs to lead the Indians past Chaffee 42-8 on Friday night.
The Indians (6-2) won their fifth straight game.
Though this was a nonconference game, they are perfect in the Mississippi Area Football Conference Blue Division for small schools at 4-0.
The Indians this Friday will host Ste. Genevieve Valle Catholic, also 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the MAFC Blue.
More importantly, after Valle's 29-8 nonconference win against Hayti on Friday, next weekend's clash will go a long way toward determining the Class 1 District 1 champion.
St. Vincent is the defending Class 1 state champion.
On the other end of the spectrum is Chaffee, which fell to 0-8 this year and has lost 32 consecutive games.
The Red Devils, playing at home, fell behind 28-0 at halftime.
An interception return by Seth Amschler of 30 yards put St. Vincent on the board. Lucas Robinson, who had a 50-yard interception return in the second half, ran for a short touchdown run in the first quarter. Quarterback Tim Guilliams scored on the two-point conversion to make the score 14-0.
Then Richardet scored on a touchdown run and on a 35-yard pass from Guilliams.
Eric Clements returned the opening kickoff of the second half 60 yards to put St. Vincent ahead 35-0.
Kent Courtney scored for Chaffee, with quarterback Michael Lee running in the two-point conversion.
