Illinois showed why it is the nation's 14th-ranked women's college soccer team, but Southeast Missouri State University showed why it also has such high hopes for the 2004 season.
The Illini scored two first-half goals and made them stand up during a 2-0 victory in front of nearly 300 fans at Houck Stadium Friday night. The result left both coaches fairly satisfied.
"It's a credit to Southeast. They played hard and their effort disrupted our rhythm some," said Illinois coach Janet Rayfield, whose squad improved to 2-0. "Real games are always tough, and I'm pleased to get out of here with a victory."
Said Southeast coach Heather Nelson, after seeing the Otahkians fall to 2-1: "I think we were very disciplined and organized. The girls stuck to the defensive plan we came up with. And to get eight shots against the 14th ranked team in the country, I think that's a great achievement."
Illinois dominated the first half, but Southeast came on in the second half and created a few scoring opportunities. But the Illini's strong start made the difference.
Illinois jumped on top with 20:14 left in the opening period when Tara Hurless scored from the top of the box, with an assist from Natasha Karniski.
It looked like Southeast might stave off Illinois the rest of the half, but the Illini made it 2-0 just 1:09 before the end of the period as Ella Masar found the nets from inside the box after receiving a pass from Eva Strickland.
Illinois possessed the ball for the majority of the opening 45 minutes and held an 8-3 edge in shots, but Southeast was outshot just 8-5 in the second half. The Illini had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks during the game.
Jessi Wuellner had an impressive run midway through the final period that nearly led to a goal. Southeast had its best opportunity with just under four minutes left as Molli Beard shot wide from about 10 yards out.
"You can tell Illinois can be devastating," Nelson said. "This is a perfect experience for us, to know we can play with the best teams in the country."
Illini keeper Leisha Alcia was credited with five saves. Southeast keeper Amanda Wrzos made seven saves, including two spectacular stops.
Southeast hosts Xavier (0-3)at 1 p.m. Sunday.
