Advancing to the Class 2 sectional track meet in three events last year wasn't enough for Kelly's Dalton Huffman, so the Kelly High School junior decided early this season to add to his repertoire.
A state participant in the high jump, long jump and triple jump last year decided to try life in the fast lane.
"Me and another kid started out running the 100 at the beginning of the year and ended up running some of our fastest times, even breaking the school record, so we decided to put together a 4x100 team, and ended up winning and placing and all that," Huffman said during a break in Saturday's Class 2 District 1 track and field meet at Central High School. "And then today, we got (second) and beat our (personal record) and the school record again (45.28 seconds), so it's very exciting. A very big deal."
It was a big deal -- and a big day -- for many of the Kelly athletes at the meet. As a team, both the Kelly boys and girls placed third in the district meet, but the Hawks advanced a number of athletes to next week's sectional meet.
Huffman and his relay teammates -- sophomores Matt Burford and Maurice Davis along with senior Gavin Ray -- will run in next week's sectional, along with junior sprinter Dakaria Johnson, who placed first in the 100-meter dash in 12.85 seconds and in the 200 at 27.41 seconds.
The Kelly girls squad placed third with 90 points, behind Jefferson (137) and Herculaneum (111), while the Kelly boys were also third with 80 points, behind Valle Catholic (97) and Herculaneum (92).
"Our Kelly track team has probably been the best it's ever been in a long time," Huffman said. "Our whole track team has just been breaking records the past two years."
Johnson, who finished eighth in the 100 last year at the state meet in Columbia, is looking for bigger and better things this time around.
"This year I want to at least rank in the top three, which I think I can do," she said.
She also anchored both Kelly's winning 4x100-meter relay squad, which toasted the competition with a time of 51.96 seconds, and the Hawks' 4x200 relay team, which won with a time of 1:50.94.
"I feel like we have a really good relay team," she said of Kelly's 4x100 squad. "Four fast girls, which you really don't (often) get in the relay. We made it to state last year, but I think we can keep pushing and make it to state again, and actually finish in the (top) four."
Huffman won the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 11 1/2 inches and placed second in both the high jump and long jump to qualify for the sectional meet in all four of his events.
Teammate Trey Walker shattered his personal best by more than 7 seconds to win the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:37, a race in which the senior runner led from start to finish.
"I prefer to not front-run, but that's how the race went out today, so I was just going to take control and run my race," Walker said. "The first 800 was a little slow, so I knew that I'd have more for the last 800 than I normally would, so I just started pushing it more."
Kelly junior Samantha Ratledge won the long jump title with a leap of 16-3/4, which helped soothe a second-place finish in the triple jump.
"I think I pushed myself a little harder, realizing that I had to do something in the long jump since I didn't do anything in triple, really," Ratledge said. "I didn't perform in triple today at all."
Other top area performances included Saxony Lutheran's boys 4x800 relay squad, which stunned the competition with an 8:50.70 clocking, some 12 seconds better than its seeded time.
"We were behind Herculaneum by about 10 or 11 seconds," said Saxony senior Taylor Richmond, who ran the first leg for the Crusaders. "We just wanted to come out and each person just take just a few seconds off our time and we'd be competitive with Herculaneum. But we never actually had to compete with them and we still took time off. ... We didn't expect to come in first place. We came out here thinking that we were one of the better teams out here, and we just wanted to prove that to everybody."
Greg Hapgood started the second leg in third place. By the time the senior distance specialist handed off the baton to Saxony's third runner, he had given the Crusaders a large lead.
"I don't really consider myself the best runner, but I guess that I did want to give him a good lead," said Hapgood, who also qualified for the sectional in the 1600- meter run with a third-place finish. "And I did that. ... They're around my speed, so they can keep that lead where it is and even push it further."
Freshman Drew Zieba maintained the advantage for the Crusaders over the third leg.
"I was just hoping I could keep it and not give it away," Zieba said. "As a freshman, I thought it was going to be really, really hard, [but] I did it. And I'm glad for all the guys that made it. I was trying to (not) let anyone else get past."
Saxony senior Aaron Koehler brought the victory home.
"Having that big lead, I just wanted to keep up with it," said Koehler, who was suffering the effects of an upper respiratory infection from earlier in the week. "I figured those guys put in all that work and effort for me, I'm not going to let them down. That's what I tried my best to do, and I managed to pull it off."
"Being my senior year, it's the last time I get to run, and the last time I get to run with these guys, especially. They're such a great team. I'm really pumped for sectionals coming up."
In the field events, Chaffee's Trevor Morehead won the shot put with a heave of 48-11.
"I'm pleased, but I really just wanted to hit that 50-spot," Morehead said. "I've been working all week in practice, and I thought I would work it up today, but you've got to be happy with what you get. I'm pretty pleased. Just excited to move on to the next level and hopefully make it to state."
Morehead credited Chaffee's throwing coach, Terry Glenzy, for his success.
"[Glenzy] does a great job working with us," he said. "He's one of, if not the best, coach in the area. And we do have a lot of exceptional throwers. It's a lot of credit to him."
Scott City sophomore Rachel Perry won the girls discus with a throw of 102 feet, 2 inches. She thinks she can do better.
"It just came out of my hand really good," she said of her winning toss. "I want to try and hit 110 (feet)."
Other local first-place finishers included St. Vincent sophomore Delia Lowman with a time of 1:02.19 in the girls 400 meters and Scott City's Austin Spriggs in the high jump with a 5-10 effort.
