CHASKA, Minn. -- Billy Horschel won the stroke-play qualifying at the U.S. Amateur Championship despite shooting a 6-over-par 78 in the second round on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old Horschel, whose 11-under 60 Monday at Chaska Town Course was the lowest score in USGA tournament history, finished with a two-round total of 5-under 138.
Mark Harrell shot 74 to finish second at 140. Greg Machtaler and Kyle Davis tied for third at 141.
The tournament's match-play portion begins today and runs through Sunday's 36-hole final. On Tuesday, fifty-eight players advanced to match play, and seven more will continue a playoff today for the remaining six spots. All of the match-play competition will be at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
"I'm happy I started off with that 60 first," said Horschel, who will be a sophomore at Florida this fall. "I didn't know what to expect after that. It was a struggle. I tried a couple of great escapes that didn't work out. I made all my mistakes today, I hope."
Horschel, who took a six-stroke lead into the second round, made a triple bogey on the par-5 third hole and a double bogey on the par-4 fifth.
Horschel's 60 was the best score in the 111 years of USGA events. It broke the previous record of 62, set by Christina Kim at the 2001 U.S. Girls' Junior championship and Loren Roberts at last month's U.S. Senior Open.
